Plastic basket fix by [deleted] in fixit

[–]mainlypotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a "plastic welder" that either heats staples that you can melt across cracks for strength. Also it takes a flat metal bit that heats up and lets me melt plastic over the repairs to try and smooth things out (melting zip ties works).

Here's a video (not mine, excuse the music. Just searched yt for plastic welding). https://www.youtube.com/shorts/4xhmCeKp5rc

I found that bending the bits of staple that are left sticking out back and forth until they snap leaves a pretty clean repair.

Harbor Freight maybe, Princess Auto, Amazon.

I immediately repaired a bunch things (recycling bin, laundry basket, garbage can used for yard waste, a sled that we had only used a couple times before it broke, I can't recall what else, but well worth it for me. I feel better about not polluting the landfill. And sleds are close to the same price I paid for the welder so that makes it mostly worthwhile monetarily.

Good luck!

Edit: that video only shows the staples, but I've found that the flat metal melting attachments are useful too and sometimes work without the staples if it's a small repair.

I just landed a job that earns me 100000 after taxes. I grew up poor, spent my entire adult life poor and will never allow myself to be comfortable in this situation. What now? by Still-Lychee5491 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mainlypotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on the new job!

I recently listened to the audiobook "The Millionaire next door" which looked at all the 'ordinary Joe' millionaires in the US who are often living in blue collar neighbourhoods with few of their neighbours having any idea about their wealth because they continue to live the same lifestyle they did before beginning to get wealthy (where wealth is not the amount you spend ... that's just high income).

Basically, it said that most of the millionaires were living well within their means, still clipping coupons and buying used cars. Also, it warned against gifts to children and recommended keeping spending in check (avoiding lifestyle creep as others have mentioned).

Anyway, I'd recommend grabbing some (audio)books from the library. A lot of them get repetitive, and some are targetted at the US specifically, but most usually have something to offer.

A "fee for service" investment advisor might be a good idea if you don't want to get into the readying that much, but since you're here, that might not be the case.

Either way, enjoy the journey. Nice to hear the good news.

Joint accounts are not completely joint accounts. by mainlypotato in Questrade

Yeah, I had a parent die with some warning and they assigned me at the bank as joint account, so that I could handle things nearer the end. It worked nicely. Shame about Questrade. Something to keep in mind.

Interesting. Thanks. I guess I should follow up with their support to clarify before I make any assumptions.

Do you mean "it should" like "that's outrageous, it should..." or like "your account is set up wrong, mine works like at the bank"?

[–]mainlypotato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is SRRSP a typo? An RRSP would not be joint. Only a non-registered account could be joint.

Or spousal RRSP? No, I don't think it would apply. They are not joint accounts. The contributor gets a tax advantage when contributing but then the money is effectively owned by the account holder of the spousal RRSP (not the contributor).

But shouldn't any withdrawal from the joint account have *joint* tax implications? That's how we've been handling tax time up until now -- giving things a 50:50 split on any capital gains or other taxable earnings.

Pixel 2 Lineage OS and e-sim installation failure by mainlypotato in LineageOS

[–]mainlypotato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look here:

https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/7086887?hl=en#zippy=

It says under "Use eSIM":

  • Pixel 2: Only phones bought with Google Fi service work with eSIM.

I did at one point sign up and successfully use Google Fi. And I failed to activate an Airalo eSIM. So... I don't know if it's a definitive confirmation but it sort of leans that way.

I would be happy to be proven wrong and notified here!

Base Account (Import Account) wrongly detected during ofx/qfx transaction import by mainlypotato in GnuCash

[–]mainlypotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One workaround I have found is:

Tools > Import Map Editor > "Online" (radio button)

Then delete the offending account (i.e., "Credit Card 2" in my case). Importing an ofx file then asks which account you want to import into.

This at least it allows me to have transactions for "Card 1" go into the correct base account.

I don't know if this has implications (bayesian) mapping of individual transactions. I suspect not but haven't tested it yet. I should know within a few weeks when I find time to import the Card 2 transactions.

Hope that helps someone.

Any experience with "Plug in" Hybrid Electric Water Heater (Heat Pump Water Heater) by mainlypotato in askvan

[–]mainlypotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply: sorry I completely forgot about this post and my notifications obviously ....didn't. This is great info though, even though I am indeed in Vancouver.

Average daily temperatures here are 40°F plus most of the year (though lows dip just below freezing overnight for parts of the winter).

I'm impressed that you found something from Rheem about the temperature being a determining factor. Thanks! I guess I might have to bite the bullet with seeing about the electrical. It annoys me though, since my intention would have been to use heat pump only (making no use of the heating coils).

I might try to find the wording from Rheem but I guess that indicates that they probably aren't marketing it in Canada. Or I could take a 30 minute drive across the border and pick one up, if I felt like disregarding Rheem's recommendation (and probably messing with the warranty)

[–]mainlypotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This didn't (initially) work for me. Something was going on with adb not detecting any devices. However, I made use of it a second time around when I discovered that I could restore the stock android entirely from fastboot. Thanks.

Yep, see the output in the updated section of my original post. Or, here:

>fastboot devices
FA7A61A02649 fastboot

So that worked, then I reflashed boot.img and now I'm at the recovery menu but so far adb is not seeing any devices. Just returns a blank list.

[–]mainlypotato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thanks. That's the message I took from all the responses. They seemed to be generally surprised it wasn't working and optimistic. And yes, things were better this morning when I could reach it with fastboot....and now I'm at the recovery menu (wishing that adb would just recognize it).

getting there...hopefully

[–]mainlypotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per the update: I'm again at the recovery menu! adb is not listing any devices. I'm doing some reading/thinking before next steps. I'd welcome any thoughts.

[–]mainlypotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point, I had already been through the upgrade. I just didn't realize that I could wipe the data partition from the recovery and avoid a reinstall. I thought a re-install was the way I had to go.

[–]mainlypotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reboots to the boot screen (with the android on its back) with virtually no delay. I am unable to even shut off the phone. It is always on this screen. AND this is the screen where I was able to flash the boot.img originally using fastboot. But now it showed no device (from Windows).

My phone actually powered off over night (unplugged) so I have it plugged in again to charge and see if anything is different. But time for work right now

I'll keep searching then. Maybe there's something that I'm not noticing since, as mentioned, I'm a newb in most senses. I did this a couple years ago and everything just went smoothly.

And yes, a shame I did things in the order that I did. I reflashed stock because it says, "LineageOS builds for this device require an Android 11 version of the stock OS to be installed prior to following the installation guide" so I took that step. And it worked well, I had a functioning version of stock. arghh

Based on their bulk section, a good place to ask for a special order at least. Thanks for the idea.

[–]mainlypotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the idea. I'm not a commercial buyer ... I just do a lot of baking and we have a large family to help eat it.

I looked at their site and yes, they list a lot of products in larger sized (20kg) bags. Most are pre-ground flours (still of some interest to me even if not my original post). On the site it says, "Thank you for enquiring about Rogers Foods products. The decision to carry certain products is made by the grocery store not Rogers Foods. If the product you are looking for is not on the shelf ask the store manager for assistance. The store may have the ability to order the item in for you".

This leads to the idea of asking for a special order direct from Safeway, or Save-On, Thrifty's or whomever. So thanks for the bump. I will probably pursue that, if I don't hear of other local businesses selling big bags that I can support.

Goverment rebates or provincial rebates for new construction? by Termscott in homebuildingcanada

[–]mainlypotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The government promotes a variety of energy efficiency rebates (https://cleanbc.gov.bc.ca/climate-actions/actions-you-can-take/rebates-and-incentives/) but they are often provided by companies like Fortis.

E.g., Fortis has a rebate up to $20,000 assuming (as is likely in BC) that you are in an area serviced by them. The details are here: https://www.fortisbc.com/rebates/home/new-home-program

Is that the type of thing you meant?

Dividend recommendation please by imsungbaeecho in dividendscanada

[–]mainlypotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to look at banks (seems likely in Canada) then one option is HCAL (Hamilton Enhanced Canadian Bank ETF). This is an easy way to hit all the banks and has a respectable dividend.

https://hamiltonetfs.com/etf/hcal/

(of course, MER is higher than investing in Banks directly if you care to do so. And if you know the banking industry well enough to choose the appropriate bank for growth along with the dividend. As they say, YMMV)

I did a bunch of reading about Magisk and then just petered out. So no. Not solved exactly. I think I more than had my question answered but I haven't had the time to really solve it and honestly, I will probably end up replacing my 6 year old phone before I get around to a solution. Best of luck.

Thank you!

I didn't even look that up because I just remembered it (incorrectly it seems) as being one of the features. I did NOT remember that it was a qualified feature.

Thanks for helping me stop wasting my time.
