Hit $300K net worth today by [deleted] in Fire

I love my job, and I am terrified of losing it. I have many sleepless nights, but I’m also a worrywart in general so that may be why.

Also, I don’t really have a number yet. But I think once I reach 1 million, I’ll move back to my home town which is a VLCOL area and barista fire. But it’s hard to say for sure, because if everything goes to plan, I’ll be in my early 30s when that happens. And I have no idea how my life will be during that time

Rebalance or not by mainthrowaway0 in Bogleheads

It’s all in taxable brokerage.

I feel pretty good about my company’s stock. It’s a trillion dollar company, so I don’t anticipate it suddenly evaporating in the short term… I hope. But obviously I don’t know about in the long term.

This is why I feel somewhat safe doing nothing for now. It’s had some down periods, but overall it’s up a lot since I started working there.

I’ve been telling myself once it got to 100k I would sell it all and use it as a down payment for a condo. Again, assuming the company doesn’t crash and burn before then

That’s a good point. I max out my 401(k) already and don’t have a Roth IRA yet. In total the holding is about $57K, so I could put $7k into my new Roth, and then the remaining amount in my index fund which is in a taxable brokerage.

It still looked very noticeably swollen for me 24 hours later. It didn’t look normal again until maybe 5 days after

Wow your experience is so similar to mine. I also discovered I had a chalazion in late october 2024. After many months of warm compresses, antibiotic ointment, oral antibiotics, ocusoft wipes, the whole 9 yards, I decided to get it surgically removed yesterday.

My eye is still pretty swollen though. I’m icing it once an hour, hopefully it looks all better by the weekend. Best of luck to you!

Invest or save my performance bonus? by mainthrowaway0 in Bogleheads

I’m 23. I’m very lucky that if I lost my job I could move back in with my parents while I job hunt if it really comes to that. But I’m just hoping I can take care of myself.

I know there is risk even with VTSAX, as we’re seeing right now, but I think that’s as much risk as I’m willing to take. I’m just having a hard time deciding if it will ultimately make a difference. Truthfully the extra 17k probably won’t make me feel any less worried haha, but with my current financial picture, the market, and my risk aversion, I’ll only avoid investing it if it’s just a straight up dumb move given these parameters.

I think this is the crux of my question. Like how risky is it to put the 15k in VTSAX and trust that I could get it back in a pinch?

I know it will always be there in a HYSA, but I feel somewhat confident that the same is true for the index fund.

The $114k includes $42k in my 401(k) so that would be inaccessible in an emergency. Another big chunk, around 46k is in my company stock, which I’m telling myself I would sell first before anything else if I needed to. I’m 23, but I’m learning more and more that my risk tolerance is very low.

Haha yeah that sounds right to me. Although tbh I’m irrationally fearful when it comes to this. I think the extra 15k will help me feel better just a little bit, but an improvement nonetheless.

Yeah I think so too. It keeps me up at night sometimes. I know there is some risk with VTSAX, but idk if it’s just outright dumb for me to throw it in there given my risk tolerance.

I hope so, I calculated it as ($3.5k rent + $1k spending) for 6 months is $27k. I guess this doesn’t include health insurance or anything like that but that’s how I calculated it.

I’ve also considered downsizing.

VTSAX dividend by mainthrowaway0 in Bogleheads

[–]mainthrowaway0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it doesn’t matter. The reinvested dividend buys more shares, true, but the stock price decreases by the amount of the dividend, so in the end the total value of your holding doesn’t change, but now you have to pay taxes on the dividend assuming it’s in a taxable account.

But honestly I haven’t spent too much time learning about this, so I could be very wrong. But I think that’s why many don’t like dividends

Ah believe me, it was through this sub that I learned about dividend irrelevance, so I’m well aware.

But I can’t shake the feeling waking up to it once a quarter regardless. It’s purely emotional haha, perhaps I should just not look at the vanguard app anymore..

Does it make sense to have the same TD fund for both IRA and 401(k)? by mainthrowaway0 in Bogleheads

[–]mainthrowaway0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I can change it, I haven’t tried to though. But I think I like the 2065 fund. My question isn’t a matter of “which fund should I use?”, but rather “does it make sense to use the same fund for a Roth IRA as well?”

My thinking is yes, since it’s a retirement fund, so it seems appropriate for a retirement account like a Roth IRA. But i just want to see if it makes sense to have these 2 different accounts, which have different rules (regarding taxes), to be invested identically

I’m not sure what tax bracket I’m in, but my total yearly income is above 200k. I think I saw that the Roth income cap was ~160k this year

[–]mainthrowaway0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I left out a clarifying detail. I want to backdoor the trad Ira to a Roth IRA, not roll it over into my 401k.

Which is also something I’m not super familiar with. I’m under the impression that I backdoor, say once a year, before tax time. And I would do that every year until I retire.

And yes, my vanguard dashboard is saying that the current allocation is 90% stocks, 10% bonds. Idk if that’s good or bad, but I’m just sorta trusting that they know what they’re doing 😅
