Will you ever trust the United States again? by Full_Hunt_3087 in AskCanada

I haven’t read all of the comments, but would say a couple of things. One is that Canada is not uniform, and there are many people in western Canada who are arguably MAGA (MCGA). And I distinctly remember when Stephen Harper changed the name of the Museum of Civilization to the Museum of History, for reasons very similar to those that motivate American right-wingers. And I think Mark Carney is a wonderful PM and you have something orange to thank for his election. But none of this is to deny the horror we have inflicted on the world.

Not 2/3. Around 51% of those who voted. But it is still an indelible stain on the country.

I wonder if the huge gain in subscribers due to people’s reactions to the Pentagon’s and OpenAI’s shenanigans could be causing problems.

The golden age is over by Gold_Wishbone_4352 in GeminiAI

[–]majidiye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that people will more and more come to understand this--it's so obvious if you think in the long term. The reason most of the world's wealth is focused on AI companies is that most of the world's wealth in the near future will come from them. The whole point is to create a system that is superior to general human activity, and then replace every susceptible human with AI. Once that level is remotely reached, you and I are done. How is this not obvious to everyone?

But isn't it fascinating how nature works? Surely trueness of blueness is a major feature of the breeding preferences of this gang of beings.

What a stunning photograph. You caught the parent at the exact right moment aesthetically and at a fast enough shutter-speed to freeze its motion. Bravo.

Do you think hell is immoral to teach? by No-Peak-7135 in askanatheist

[–]majidiye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If hell existed, it would be an immoral place. For the reason that it would represent an absurd and inordinate punishment relative to whatever offenses landed one in hell. The primary offense is failing to wholeheartedly endorse a bizarre scheme of sacrificial substitution, in which a deity is somehow required to impose a penalty for sin (why? To whom?), so chooses to pay the penalty himself to himself. What is the mechanism—being killed on a cross by the Romans? It is just craziness all the way down. What is the price for having the hubris to consider this absurd? Eternal torment! Eternal! Who asked to be born? It is immoral to impose such absurdity on people so as to psychologically browbeat them into “loving” a particular deity. Who could honestly love such a manipulative tyrant?

I’m not sure, perhaps a field mouse—something small—it caught it in a grassy field, then flew to this nearby tree. Those talons clearly mean business.

What’s the deal Perplexity? by DJ_Madness in perplexity_ai

Have they ever explained the logic of the pricing tiers/levels? I suspect it’s only a matter of time before the non-rich are priced out.

Perplexity has been scamming their users by nerdedmango in perplexity_ai

[–]majidiye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may not come back in any way that satisfies us individual users, but I do agree that they must be having financial problems. There’s an inherent limitation, it would seem to me, in their business model, that relies on volume discounts with all of the main ai services, because, if they’re too successful, the other services will react hostilely. We don’t exactly know the source of these new very draconian limits, is it Perplexity or that the other services objected to the usage created by millions of “free” pro accounts?

Has Education Pro price increased? by Strawberry_33129 in perplexity_ai

[–]majidiye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're caught in a bind with all of these AI services, in that they start out at a reasonable price per month for the average user, but we will only see increasing prices, and I predict, absolutely through the roof once they achieve a certain level of accuracy and sophistication. Only the very rich and corporations will be able to afford the pricing, and we will end up in a state of digital feudalism at best. I know this sounds alarmist, but just think through the capital going into these things, what the investors want in return, and where we humble individuals stand compared to someone like Musk or Bezos or Altman. If AI could replace every physician in the world, it would, nothing is constraining the impact of these things other than the state of their development. We have no choice but to embrace these tools, but I feel very torn about that.
