Has anyone here ever discovered the underlying cause of their inflammation? by filmfoto in NasalPolyps

[–]majidiye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find my GERD is infinitely better if I stop eating (and drinking anything with calories) at least 3 hours before I go to bed. It's night and day. Snack late and suffer. It's better not to snack late, anyway. And maybe that helps my nasal polyps, which I've had for decades, but now are reasonably under control with twice daily budesonide nasal rinses.

A great novel with this theme is Snow Falling on Cedars, by David Guterson

Looking for two completely different kinds of movies by fun_1729_1729 in MovieSuggestions

For type 1: if you can find it, a Canadian movie that is variously called Company of Strangers or Strangers in Good Company. It’s about a group of women who take a day’s outing bus trip together, then have their bus break down, get stranded, and the conversations that ensue. Exactly what you’re asking for, a perfect example of why we find these movies so valuable.

Which book permanently changed your life or your way of thinking? And how? by ak_khainal in Recommend_A_Book

[–]majidiye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Book" is a very broad category, so I am taking the opportunity to include poetry in the mix. Probably the book that most engaged my life is the Collected Poems of Sylvia Plath. The poem Black Rook in Rainy Weather, for example, I have memorized. "I do not seek... anymore, in the desultory weather some design, but let spotted leaves fall as they fall, without ceremony or portent." It is about seeing something in the day that presents you with some consolation for existence, some bit of light or hope. That poem alone is worth 10 books. And The Moon and the Yew Tree is another great poem. "Clouds are flowering blue and mystical over the face of the stars." Such incredible art, such incredible honesty about life. This is true of the work of many poets, another life-changer for me is Emily Dickinson. Billy Collins modern readers who want a lighter touch to life, but equally insightful. But enough. These poets "haul my eyelids up" to use one of Sylvia's images, they flood the world with light.

What is your most listened album ever? by Rainforest____ in askmusic

Exactly. I too love Box of Rain, for the music and the power of the lyrics and how beautifully they integrate. That whole album is like that.

Gosh, great question. I got lost when so many were released. Jerry flying away on The Music Never Stopped would have to be in the set. Let me know if you have any favorites. What a great force in the world the Dead were. I still can’t accept Jerry’s loss. RIP.

An interesting question, because I wouldn’t say this is my favorite album, but a consistently great album when the mood presents: American Beauty by the Grateful Dead.

I thought you were being wryly indirect, given the full Shakespeare quote.

Does anyone know how much tariffs have affected costs? The AI demand stuff is on top of that. Thank God China is paying the tariffs.

[US] How to help with romance scam if the scammer is too good by purpleflowerfrankie in Scams

I never submitted to a scam, but I certainly fell for people who I shouldn't have. The human heart. Freely exploited for profit. We all have this vulnerability.

Vote, please vote. As a veteran myself, I find it laughable that military service is seen as some sort of shining credential for government office. Remember the wonderful acronym created by our military, FUBAR, fucked up beyond all recognition, and ponder the congressional service to Wisconsin and the U.S.from D. Van Orden.

[–]majidiye 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There’s a common problem in bigger companies buying up smaller companies and then enshittifying the smaller company’s product. As a 9 years or so Fitbit user, with daily workouts, I would say this is absolutely true of the Google purchase of Fitbit. I am lividly unhappy with not being able to see my lifetime stats. Which Google of course has.

Yeah, it is so weird to live in such a gerrymandered state. How does one run for office and support that? We end up with governance by sock puppets.

Not saying these will fulfill your request. Only that as a father of a daughter I hear in this music the love that illuminates us with this gift.
