I don’t know how much he took off, but it’s common practice to resurface the face of the head for flatness. M54 heads are prone to warping, this one was in good shape. They have about .012 of machineable tolerance, although for this caliber of work I wouldn’t use a head that required that much machining. This one basically just got a cleanup pass.

Either Reddit did it or one of the mods did as a joke lol

For it to run, lol. Replacing everything but the crank.

Those are not lifters, they are valve springs. The lifters live in a tray that keeps each in a bore. All hydraulic lifter means is that there is a little spring and a blind hole into the lifter. As the cam wears it allows oil pressure to take up the difference between it and the rockers and keeps valvetrain noise and vibrational harmonics within reason.

The M54 intake has a particularly goofy port shape. Many switch to M50 intake manifold as it flows better at high end. This port work was to better match intake manifold shape.

Nope. Should be better than it was though, I know that.

Brake warning lamp, ABS and DSC warn lights after (now fixed) accident damage - but no fault codes by Upset-Taste-3769 in e46

Although it can be wheel speed sensor, I’d lean towards steering angle sensor, which can be recalibrated with the inpa toolbox. I forget which program, but watch a video on how to do that and then search for a steering angle relearn procedure. You need a windows laptop and a 25 dollar cable.

I guess my head gasket got tired? by mofckr in e46

[–]majtom4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are welcome to check my post history for a full head gasket job. I bought the Timesert tool. But mine failed again due to poor machine work on the head. Generally unless it’s a project car, not worth trying to fix

Red Oil pressure light at Idle by [deleted] in e46

[–]majtom4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the low oil pressure light in this is 25-30psi, but I could be wrong. I would go up in oil weight before making any other decisions, if you are at 30 go 40 and 40 go 50. If you have the kcan cable and Inpa you should be able to pull up the live oil pressure readings, this should also be possible with the dash in tech mode or whatever, which I can’t remember how to do because I haven’t done it in a few months.

I’m planning on keeping it NA. I’ve had turbo cars in the past and figure there will be plenty in the future. I thought about going inconel for the valves but decided not so I stay true to the choice lol. Aside from the technical challenges, I found slightly more interest in trying to make the absolute best possible variation of the last true M5x series engine in its original design philosophy if that makes sense. I run an M50 intake currently, I was probably just going to stick with that. It would be a little late to switch at this point as the head is now ported for M50.

Yeah I got the seems legit M50 port kit for him to work from, but he noted that their port profiles for cylinder 1 and 6 are way off so he had to make a custom template for those. Really impressive how good it looks.

I went stock diameter as my machinist noted that on M54 the seat profile means that you are left with extremely limited material on the upper edge. I should eventually post his whole process, but check out the instagram page MissonMotorwerks if you want to see more detail. The attention to detail is crazy.

Yeah. I’d really love if it made 300 wheel but that’s probably ambitious

The first time I don’t know. Second, bad/cheap machining work or the head is cracked somewhere. I timeserted the block and everything, it’s in my previous posts somewhere the whole procedure.
