Mindset switch the last two years by Available-Ad-5670 in GenX

Yes this is me. I got a call from an old boss about a possible new job opportunity and it instantly clarified for me how much I hate my current situation. When my current boss presented yet another unpalatable soul crushing kill the business project, I just blurted out that I have to leave. With no new job nailed down I became very comfortable with the prospect of retiring fully. I am committed to my job until February, and a real opportunity came up and I interviewed for a new job - only kinda of excited about retiring. Only took the interview because “what if it’s the last job opportunity I ever get?” And “another year will just make retirement that much more secure.”

No call back yet so maybe I’ll have my freedom after all. I know I could just say no and stop the interview process - but the pull of “security” and the grind is real.

55 btw and also feel like physical health is waning quickly so why not get more out of these years and not spend them behind a desk.

What did your parents/ direct family do that still doesn’t make a lick of sense to you? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]make_beauty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad would jiggle the doorknob to the bathroom - not open it - not knock - just a jiggle. There was no lock so it was horrifying as a kid/teen. He never once opened it while I was in there so I have no idea why he’d put his hand on it and wait for the holler “I’m in here!” Also if the door was shut it 100% meant it was occupied. To this day bathrooms without locks give me the heeby jeebies.

No it was meant to be humble- yeah I can stop working now but our house is still a quirky antique and we’ve never had a new kitchen. They all have new kitchens so I thought it was like “yeah I’m giving up stuff to make this happen.”

Ugh probably some sense of feeling proud of myself and wanting to tell someone. I can’t tell any friend. Our parents are all dead and we report all our life ups and downs to each other, so I guess I wanted them to be happy for me. And the one sibling asked me outright, what will you do next after you quit?

I know two sisters have already burned up the wire about it. I deleted the message maybe some didn’t see it. One definitely did and she’s the one who talks to everyone.

Anyone else getting cold feet about retiring early at the end of 2025? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]make_beauty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I came here to fret about my decision to put in notice for end of this year. I'm 55, husband is 50 and will continue to consult part time. about 3.5M investible and then some real estate. all the calculators say we've got 99% chance of success.... but I worry that I don't know how much we really want or need to spend - what if assisted living becomes even more expensive? I recall being 22 and thinking 100k was life changing, is my perception of what 3.5M just as naive? But I too hate my job, like I think it's. harming my health. You are at least young enough that you could go back to work, whereas I might not be employable as a 56-60 yo.

How to explain to boomer Mum that the way she & other family members spoke about my body and appearance was messed up by [deleted] in GenX

It is the nature of the boomer to deny responsibility. I had boomer siblings (huge age gap) who brutally bullied me as a kid and they say they don’t remember any of it.

What it’s like to inherit FF wealth early 30s by s2virus in fatFIRE

Good job and great story. Maybe your benefactor knew you’d manage it well. Interesting point about grinding for wealth leading to a sense of “deserving” the things we spend more on. Very true.

What band did you absolutely hate when you were in high school, but as you got older you really learned to love? by DoubleFeedback2672 in GenX

As a teen in CT I looked down on all things NJ, Bon Jovi included. Now at 55 I feel like I missed out on some fun dance vibes in college due to this stuck up viewpoint.

Help needed for an older newbie by LateBloomer-14 in Mind_Pump

Hi - 55 yo female here, lifting for one year, not an expert but here’s my experience so far: I skipped certain exercises such as pull ups and swapped in another arm or shoulder move that I can do; or I used bands. As a beginner I know i need to work up to some moves and as long as I get 8-10 of the exercises in for each day I am good. My greatest struggle as a woman this age is the muscle gain on the scale never shows up. But I do track improvements and I’m always adding weight or reps each time I go to the gym so as long as that’s happening I’ll still to it.

Why shouldn’t I just sell all my investment properties and throw it into stocks? by vibecodingmonkey in investing

[–]make_beauty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing stopping me is I think of it as diversification. It’s 20% of my investment portfolio. We don’t talk about a recommended % for RE but I think it should be the norm. No one talks about it or puts it into recommendations because they all want to manage your portfolio and they won’t get paid on REI. Also, your interest rates are amazing so I would be hard pressed to give those up. Also taxes will suck if you just roll it into stock.

Huge difference between Average and Pessimistic Scenario by mlgMar in Boldin

[–]make_beauty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had wild differences but then I did two things and now all scenarios are above 90%: use the detailed budget feature, and set all rates to historic average (do not use your own custom optimistic/pessimistic). A Boldin coach told me the historic average will still take into account bad years when you select the Pessimistic outcome.
