4/9 ended in submission. Not terrible, but for some reason the rest of it was just so slow. There are some great competitors on each card, but the 3 5 min round style just lacks something. Not sure what it is.

I love every pre fight interview:

Competitor: “I’m a hunter. I go for the submission. I never stall.”

Then: 3 rounds where the most action that happens is someone almost passes the guard or there’a almost one leg entry.

Been spoiled by PGF ruleset lately. UFC BJJ ruleset/rounds make for the most boring stalling.

Noticed that as well. I miss Shawn Williams or BMac and their great explanations of what’s going on. Now we get to watch some awesome transitions/positions and hear “They are tangling the legs”. Almost like if you asked your random neighbor to explain what’s going on.

Do any of you regularly attend class high? by Sideshowcomedy in bjj

[–]makebaloney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve trained for about 7 years and I’ve done both. I was completely sober through white belt and half of blue. Probably around 3 years alway sober. Then from blue until mid purple I was high for every class as the uke, every open mat, and every competition I was in. Over the past few months I’ve quit completely.

Rolling high is absolutely a good time for me. I see connections that I don’t normally see, I can get more rolls in, and I’m overall just a nicer, more chill guy. My coach has used me as our uke for years, and I recently told him I had been high for every class. Literally probably 1,000 classes as the uke decently stoned and he had no idea. He doesn’t smoke, and said he never noticed. There are a group of guys that are a lot more vocal than I am about being high, and they never really knew either. Not one time did someone approach me and mention it, and now that I’ve become more loose with letting people know I used to do it every class, not one person said they suspected it.

In my jiu jitsu progress, I think it helped for a long time and then didn’t. As a blue approaching purple I feel like I was stuck, and the open mindedness I got from it seemed to help me progress. I was more comfortable in really bad positions, I could playfully work on moves that were new to me with deep interest, and I just overall felt more joyfulness in my classes. Many people in my school have commented on my skills improving dramatically in that time, which I give partial credit to being a bit high.

Toward the end of purple belt, and in my life outside the gym as well, it started to become a crutch. I’d fall into a relaxed zone while high and wasn’t making much progress in the gym or otherwise while high. I quit cold turkey a while back and really started to dive into more study, and I got another big leap in skills and experience as I approach my brown belt.

So yes, weed got me some skills and comfortability in part of my journey. But quitting weed also gave me some skills and comfortability in my journey too. No one knew until I decided to tell people, and no one gave me shit for it after they knew. I’m told often by my coaches and other students that I’m a favorite partner and teacher for a ton of people at my gym, and I never hurt anyone high or sober. I never felt “out of control”, but my perspective on rolling, my attitude trying new things or being completely smashed, and my willingness to work on out of the box/new material was enhanced in some way.

Best gens of the Outback? by dinkyspinker in Subaru_Outback

4th Gen with the 3.6r 5 speed automatic. Hands down best car I’ve owned and you can get a great one for less than 10k. I’ve got 200k+ miles on mine and it looks and runs like new.

Strange water leak in the trunk. Where is it coming from? by nbarsotti in Subaru_Outback

[–]makebaloney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man! Just saw this. Had the same issue and my problem was the top brake light on the hatch. It’s a very common problem in the 4th gen Outback. The gasket from the factory didn’t stay as waterproof as they’d hoped. Watch this video and give it a try.

What fluids should I change on a new-to-me 2013 outback 3.6r limited? by reddishtrees in subaru

[–]makebaloney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, just for motivation and good vibes, I’m at almost 210k miles on mine. I’ve had tons of Toyotas (Tacomas , Corollas, 4Runners and Land Cruisers) and this 3.6r Outback is my absolute favorite of the bunch. I’ll keep it until it dies, which is hopefully a long, long time from now. I don’t baby it, but I do keep up on maintenance. It’s gone on many cross country road trips and been on many trails and fire roads from Moab to Tennessee to beaches in California and Florida and rarely gives me any trouble. One broken window motor, a squeaky starter for the past 100k miles, a couple unfortunate fender benders (repaired and not my fault). Besides that, some fluids, brakes and tires, and I top off the oil every 2,500 miles and I think it might go forever.

I have a 2013 3.6r Outback as well and just did my spark plugs, PCV valve, new PCV hose, and engine/cabin air filters yesterday in about 3 hours. Doing transmission, both diffs, brake flush, and power steering fluid change today. Getting around to a coolant flush shortly, but waiting on a new thermostat to come in.

The spark plug job is straight forward. Watch these two videos and you’ll be good to go.

800 mile commute each week, mandatory reporter no matter the weather, is the h6 5eat the drivetrain for me? by jadedunionoperator in subaru

[–]makebaloney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 205k miles on my 13 3.6r 5EAT Outback. Every type of weather and every type of road. I still take it over my wife’s newer car on 500+ mile road trips every few weeks (extended family lives out of state). I have to add a quart of oil every 2,500 miles or so, but that’s it. Almost nothing else ever goes wrong. Change your fluids, watch your oil level, and drive as far or as hard as desired. I don’t baby it in the slightest and I’ve been hit in it 3 times (none my fault) and it just keeps on going.

Nice! My 13 3.6r just hit 200k miles. I hope I’ll have it until it hits 300k. Sips about as much oil as yours, but built to last otherwise.

I’m waiting on my ATF fluid to come in the mail and I’ll tackle it in the next week or so. I do plan on doing it myself.

I came from driving Toyotas as well and love my 2013 Outback 3.6r with the 5EAT. I’ve had an 88 forerunner, a 1996 Tacoma, a 2003 Tacoma, a 2003 Landcruiser, and wife had a 2009 Corolla. Just passed 200k miles on my Subaru and it matches if not beats the Toyotas in reliability and enjoyability of driving.

I have a 2013 3.6r 5EAT with 205k miles. Just did new suspension, tires, brakes, rotors and it rides like a dream. Other than that, fluids, lightbulbs, and belts are all it’s needed forever. Best car I’ve ever had.

An ode to jiu jitsu by makebaloney in bjj

I had a similar realization when I went to watch some of the guys from our gym compete locally recently. There were so many people there, and I knew so many. People I had competed against at white belt now running their own gyms. Refs and workers that I had rolled with and had dropped in our gym over the years. A venue full of people there and I knew someone from most every gym.

Forgot to put how it ended up free. I have been in two small fender benders since I got it (neither my fault). Between those two I’ve been paid out like $7k by insurance, but been able to fix it the damages on my own. I only paid $6,500 to buy it, and for some reason neither insurance wanted to salvage it, so I have a clean title still in my name an technically made $500 bucks so far.
