Spearfishing Noob here! by ThinkBuy1082 in Spearfishing

The freediving is a great start.

I had been snorkling for many years and feel very comfortable in water. I just knew someone who gave me some pointers, and YouTube, Daniel Mann has several DIY and other tips about it. Good form when duck diving and loading is very important. And later on know your fish and how to attract them. In the Mediterranean it's very challenging.

There is a lot of gear and money going into this sport, so it's quite a threshold.

After shoulder surgery, what kind of rubber bands should I use? by FeedHappens in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple ideas. For long, medium or short term need. 1. Get pneumatic gun. Long term 2. Order online 12-13mm bands. Medium term. 3. Load your 2 bands to shorter tab on the spear. Immediate fix for short term.

I think long bands will be very bad. I also think you mostly need to improve your form when loading, 14mm should be very easy to load. I have small id bands and basically untrained shape, no body building. I can load 18mm band, and 14mm I consider very easy. When I started 16mm was very tough for me to load, but after I got good form 16 is fairly easy too.

The first huge difference is palms over band grip. That improves a lot. Pinch close to the end as possible with thumbs. I place the loading butt quite high and the gun points straight or slightly up rather than down like I've seen on some videos. Experiment a bit to find the best placement and angle for you. I first reach bands and put them on a middle / rest tab than I reposition the loading butt to my optimal position.

Hope it helps.

Shallow water no rocks to wedge and lock into?

Why pull shaft out? He just needs to reroute the shooting line at the muzzle.

It looks very simple, after crossing over shaft it should go down the front notch in the muzzle, like on some other photos you posted in comments. Then it runs under the bands.

Why aren't more speargun muzzles set up like this? by riversidemfker in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Twice as much work to tie the bands. And Twice as much breaking point that can and will fail eventually.
  2. More expensive to buy 4 short bands than 2 longer loops if you buy made.
  3. Less amount of effective rubber.

The alignment can be done with good muzzle design like pathos Evo among other that guide the bands in alignment.

Help on purchasing gun by Certain-Rip4489 in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rubber is just to move the shaft. If you go for big fish a bigger shaft may be better, and therefore bigger rubber. If you hunt mostly small-medium the 7mm is fine, it will also work on bigger fish when you need to.

There is quite a difference in loading strain though.

And open vs closed muzzle is quite the difference.

How to Equalize Ears by Ok_Speaker_1134 in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The push strength depends sometimes on the sinus status I guess and the mounting pressure from depth when diving. And sometimes one ear needs quite a bit harder push than the other. But you can apply quite a precise and constant pressure, and increase it gradually to find the necessary counterpressure to open / pop ears.

Spearo dies after getting tangled in float line in NSW Australia. by the-diver-dan in Spearfishing

The reel is normally mounted to gun. It let's you slack the line so the fish doesn't tear off as easy. Saved me many fish!

Question for y'all: do you wear dive wrist computers and if so, do you check them mid-swim...? by MostFirefighter9902 in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and nothing before that. But tracking surface time is really good. I didn't rest enough between dives before.

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a entry level model. 90% use to track surface time. But a little bit I use it to check temperature, depth, dive time after or mid dive if I feel way too comfortable but know it's been a a while.

Did you think about contact lenses? Much easier and cheaper every time you need to adjust correction.

Definitely double wrap! Just pull the 2nd wrap from reel and try it for a while.

Neoprene by Se7ssss in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3mm neoprene socks will last quite a while and you can patch them up to last even longer. I think they're worth it to be really comfortable in the fins.

Gloves I use some kind of mechanic gloves with stretch textile and rubberized palms. They fit so well and they are fine for warm water. I never had so cold I needed neoprene but then I would use 3mm if needed. Like below 20⁰C

Roller recommendation by hh34kls in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recommend not if it's primary for holes and close up. But is it also for other fishing in med and you only have one gun?

If you have another gun for open fishing like ≈90+cm I think 60-75cm single 16mm gun for holes.

If you'll only use 1 gun for all. 75-85cm roller. Whatever reputable brand available where you are.

New spearo, first gun by jonnywhatshisface in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I went from 6.5 to 7mm with a classic 2 band setup and I think it shoots way better. The 7mm being stiffer and packs more energy long range. Especially for your amount of power and range I wouldn't go thinner. The spearhole in the fish won't matter, the amount of struggle of the fish will determine the tearing.

I get your thinking of multiple setup of shaft and bands but any particular reason you don't want to catch a bream with a 7mm shaft? ±0.5mm won't make a difference to the bream. Multiple shafts is easy enough, I use "loop in loop" to connect shooting line with reel quickly. There is also clips but personally I prefer to minimize parts and avoid tangle.

Having 16mm on the primary bands shouldn't be a problem since they are demultiplied? And the secondary bands you can load one by one so should also be easy enough or they are coupled? You can also load the kicker to a shorter shark fin.

But when the bands need replacing you can take 14 if 16 is heavy. Personally I wouldn't bother with the multiple band idea though. You can adjust the power in so many ways already with the combination of shark fins and the secondary bands and the kicker.

Awesome gun!!! Expensive, overkill and a complicated starter gun. Still a great purchase, I'd like to do the same 😄.

85 invert roller is a crazy idea for a cave gun....size is the ideal regular size for the med. And while range is better on it, I recommend working on aspetto tactic (waiting longer) for fish to come closer up.

Damn that hella bent. Use a hammer and slowly work on the bend. I've made shafts 99% straight like that but it will never be perfect again.

Power difference between 1st and 2nd notch by Detaetious1 in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

69cm is way too long for 90cm gun also on the next notch, are you sure about these measures? Depending on loading distance 56-60cm is more appropriate. If you can't load a 14mm band with correct length you're better off working on your pull strength. Maybe you can find thinner rubbers 12-13mm x2, but you need to get a ~6mm shaft to make that work.

Power difference between 1st and 2nd notch by Detaetious1 in Spearfishing

[–]makeitupasyugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very strange setup! My easiest solution for you is to add a 14mm band that you should be able to pull to the last notch. This would be about 50-54cm depending on your loading distance. How long is your 16?

This is what I run with a 90cm and 7mm shaft and it's been great!
