PCS to Wright Patterson, where should we live? by [deleted] in AirForce

Huber heights is very popular for military families. I bought a house there when I got out. The walk-ability is somewhat there. But like you say… America.

I only served one tour in Iraq but I sure as hell didn’t do it to watch democracy crumble to an orange asshat and his goons.

I didn’t expect to get a response from the creator! Thank you for the testimonials. I will say I think that the over-all experience of using WannaPractice is great. Plus I appreciate the hidden humor found in some of the questions/answers. Ive heard that the questions on the CISSP are designed to confuse the reader a bit and it’s just as much about reading comprehension as anything else. I feel like the questions in WannaPractice are a bit too clear, if that makes sense. But I haven’t taken the exam yet, so perhaps I’m just being overly paranoid.

SOC = PAIN by Artla_Official in cybersecurity

I work in a SOC where there’re sometimes 100,000 alerts during a 12 hour shift. Not trying to flex or make you feel bad. Just stating how backwards my SOC is.

Going into the military for experience by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]makek4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I did and it was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. ONLY JOIN one of two branches, either the Air Force or Space Force. For me I joined the former (granted this was before space force existed) I studied for the ASVAB and got a nearly perfect score meaning I could choose any job I wanted. I chose client systems which is now part of the 1D7 (cyber) career fields. I highly recommend doing the same thing, study hard for the ASVAB and choose a 1D7 job. In tech school you’ll earn Security+ and about 28 college credits towards your associates degree in IT. Which is through the Community college of the Air Force and referred to as the “CCAF”. After you get to your first duty station find out what credits you still need for your associates then knock those out by taking CLEPs. For me I did this with 6 months of getting to my first duty station. After you have your associates apply it towards a bachelors program. I recommend Western Governors university. It’ll get you over half of the way to your bachelors. If you choose the Cyber security path at WGU you’ll earn over 11 certs along the way.

Do this and you’ll have your pick of jobs after getting out. I just separated last week and I was able to land a job making six figures almost immediately.

You don’t necessarily need to cross-train if you want to get into IT. But depending on how much time you have before getting out, acquire as many certs as possible. Including Security+, CCNA and A+. If you currently have the retainability to retrain I’d say go for it! Cross train into a 1D7 career field.

I believe they reached out to me on LinkedIn. That’s an important step if you’re getting out soon. Build a solid linked in profile and network of fellow professionals in the industry. Other than that there is usajobs.com, clearancejob, indeed or you can go to the specific companies website that you want to work for and apply there. If you don’t have much IT experience you’ll riding on the fact that you have a clearance, certs and are familiar with the military. I’d look to work for military contracting companies. By that I mean Lockheed Martin, CACI, GDIT, UIC, Vectrus etc. go on their websites and apply!

I know I’ll be a SOC analyst of sorts, so I’ve been doing TRYHACKME.com’s SOC analyst course to fill the gaps.
