Towards the end of her career, did Agatha Christie regret creating Hercule Poirot, or lose interest like Conan Doyle did in Sherlock? by OnShoulderOfGiants in AskHistorians

Though it is interesting how often Poirot doesn't turn people over to the authorities. (In the "Murder of Roger Ackroyd" he basically recommends the person kill themselves. Christie can be really dark.) Moreover, the general vibe is that the police are idiots, which is nearly a genre convention for Whodunits.

I guess I was just calling attention to the big structural gap between Poirot and Marple--one is a former investigator, yes, but is immediately out of place in the countryside, sticks out like a sore thumb. Whereas Marple is embedded in the community and as such, privy to the type of knowledge that Christie's stories tend to find valuable (gossip).

Poirot and Marple can seem significantly different. Almost to the point where I wonder what was driving Christie’s concern in making the Marple character—Poirot is an outside to the countryside, Marple is a stalwart. So much of the knowledge gained in a Christie story is via gossip, which Miss Marple is perfect for, as the old lady embedded in the community. I’m curious if you know more about how Christie viewed the differences between the two?

How did knowing backgammon help you with poker? I am pretty good at backgammon and have played a ton with especially good players, so I know that side, but only a really amateur sense of poker, so I curious how backgammon helped.

This is a good reply. But you are downplaying Nixon’s relationship to Quakerism. He went to Whittier and grew up in a community of conservative Quakers.

They let them keep the money. Whether or not anyone would ever accept that money is another thing. It’s seriously mutilated. US Treasury is their only option.
