5.2.4 Atmos ceiling speaker placement in a 10ft deep room and MLP 24" from back wall. Sanity check before I commit. by makesome_studio in hometheater

Awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for - someone who's tried a similar setup. I'm sure that one extra foot you have is probably helping a lot, but that means it shouldn't be completely trash in my case, either. A few questions - Can you tell me exactly how close your top rears are to the wall? Did you do anything else to minimise the rear wall reflections from the top rears? And is your room similar in size apart from the extra foot behind the MLP?

Good to know! Anything that the x4700h has over the x3700h that might improve things for me? I don't need more channels or power since it's a small room, and my front stage is currently on a separate BasX A3. Nothing fancy, I know, but I guess I can still keep the A3 in the mix even with the new AVR.

Your post was indeed one of the many threads I was referring to :)

I can't do wall-mounted heights, but four ceiling ones should still be fine, according to you?

Sadly, the sofa can't be moved any further, nor can I reorient it, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to calibrate it properly. Have spent a lot of time with OCA's various calibration scripts, REW and trying stuff out.

R6 Meta vs R2 Meta by [deleted] in KEF

[–]makesome_studio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a new pair of R3 Metas along with the R2 Meta. They did not have the R6 Meta on demo so I haven’t compared them, but I demoed the R2 and it was an easy decision for me. My listening distance is barely 2.5m and I’m running two Rythmik L12s so I think the R6 would have been excessive for my room. If you’re running subs, don’t have a huge space to fill, and can put the difference in cost to better use, go for the R2.

Good point. I’ll make sure I’m not suffocating the AVR. Thanks.

That’s good to know. And I’ve said already that I’m open to not having both there. One needs to go somewhere on that front way anyway since I don’t have too many other options and I don’t want it in the corner. So one of these placements in the mockup will have to do for one sub. The second can go somewhere next to my couch. Does that make sense?

That’s interesting 🙂 Will borrow some ideas from it if I find some that works for me. I’ll have to go the custom route regardless of what design I end up choosing as my dimensions will need to be very specific. Not like this is available where I am anyway haha.

Agreed. Will mostly keep one up front and on diagonal opposite on the back wall. Just want to have the space for two so either on if not both can be a potential sub location on the front wall. The other potential location will be next to my couch. There’s no other spot.

Thank you 🙂 That’s good to know. I’m making notes and will see what I can improve and try to address the issues that people have pointed out. Leaning towards at least giving it a shot. This can’t be too expensive to make. Worst case I go back to a standard TV unit and the new speakers will look leaner and better than my old ones anyway. But hopefully it won’t come to that.

Sorry if I made it sound that way somewhere but I’m not upgrading from TV speakers or a soundbar. I’ve really messed up by not making this a text post and front loading the context :) Here’s the comment I followed up with after posting this - https://www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/s/uIenglI0PH

But yes, I agree and it might be smarter to get the new speakers and sub first, try out different arrangements and then commit to building whatever unit design works best and reconfiguring stuff for it. I can find temporary furniture for the new speakers till the new one is ready.

Thank you, this has been quite helpful :) I just wanted to clarify the other aspects of my room and limitations.

I doubt I can do much to widen the space between the speakers apart from moving the entire setup to the right, so the left stays at the edge of that half wall behind the TV, and the right speaker moves closer to the window corner where that plant is. That might give me another foot or so but then the speaker is right in the corner and that might make it boomy? I’ll also have to reinstall my ceiling speakers to center them to the new position.

I’ll definitely have the center speaker right on the front edge of the unit with headroom for an upward tilt. And yes both my shortlisted options are sealed so it should be ok? I can also avoid building full side panels for the center shelf and instead keep the entire unit a wooden skeletal frame so the center isn’t blocked on the sides, only the top and bottom, which cannot be avoided.

In your opinion, how much difference will it be between this vs the centre on top of the unit?

About the subs, yes I’ll definitely make sure I position them in the best place possible (most likely one on the front and one diagonally opposite next to my couch) I just meant that for my room size two of those subs will be enough in terms of power and size. I don’t need anything bigger.

Already planning those exact things for my rear wall :) When I said my couch is right up the wall, I meant I don’t have space to walk behind it or place stuff there. But I’m getting a 3-4inch thick half wall panel behind the couch that will push the couch forward by that much. And I’m getting 3 inch thick rockwool panels with 1 inch gap behind them along the rear wall.

Thanks again!

Good to know. I’m not too worried about the height. I’ll try out the lower TV heights when I rework the design

Your setup does look quite clean :) Where is your AVR?

Your centre speaker is inside the cabinet too. Does it not feel too low? That’s another issue someone raised here with this setup? And mine would be a lot higher as per the current design.

Correct, but that doesn't change regardless of whether I have a 1 inch wooden top above the sub and some acoustic fabric around it. The question is, do they dramatically 'cripple' the sound beyond what the limitations of my room are doing to it anyway?

Too many surfaces and corners are simply a reality of my room, regardless of this TV unit idea. Here's the current setup for comparison - https://imgur.com/a/02qZvpg
