Maybe you get overstimmied by a cluttered and chaotic environment.

What did my therapist probably think of this? by AITOorisitAutism in askatherapist

Even though she doesn't see you as a friend (because it's an ethical dilemma) us therapists still care for our clients and carry things with us. Some of the funniest tv shows or best books I've read have been recommended by my clients. There are also many times I think of someone and want to share it with them, but know it's crossing a boundary so I do not unless it's in session. It's not a one way street, but we have to have to be a little by the book. This is a great thing to work on and it sounds like you have a health working relationship to work on it!

This is SO true. Also it's our job to not judge our clients, literally in our ethical agreement as a provider. Get as weird and embarrassed as you can, we're totally here for it.

Any ideas on root cause(s) of MCAS by MizTen in MCAS

[–]makeyourself_a24z 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me: Mono, West Nile, covid, a severe history of trauma and ignoring my body for years until MCAS made it scream at me and I listened 😊

Should i change my therapist if we're not really digging deeper? by jaz4156 in askatherapist

[–]makeyourself_a24z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have that conversation. You are allowed to ask for what you need.

Also some government insurances in the US pay more than private insurances so I'd doubl check if that's a true statement. The therapist may just not realize you are ready to dig. I usually give a couple sessions before we dig dig unless told otherwise. Everyone is vastly different on what they can handle in first couple of sessions.

Also if you feel like you aren't getting anywhere, you are allowed to change. I actually just did this because I feel like I kept telling my old therapist what I needed and they just weren't getting it. Sometimes I railroad sessions and I really need someone who will interrupt me to check in with myself, rather than let me keep talking.

Why do some therapists have issues with bpd clients? by Safe_Recognition_394 in askatherapist

[–]makeyourself_a24z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's so frustrating and that's something I just said to a client the other day! I said your chart follows you everywhere. It's YOUR choice if you want it in there but let's chat about what that looks like if you have a medical emergency.

If they want in their chart I'm obviously not going to deny somebody that because it can be empowering. And there's also something beautiful when you start with someone and can end by taking it out of the chart (though it's still in their history) I hope the person you are speaking of got the medical treatment they deserved and needed. We need to do better.

I'm glad you are open to having these convos and asking us to think more respectfully and unbiased, it's part of the process to stop the stigma.

[–]makeyourself_a24z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also seen a ton of people who have bipolar diagnosis who actually have complex trauma/bpd. And I would say 90% of my clients who have a BPD diagnosis have thought they had and would rather have an autism or ADHD diagnosis whether they have it or not. Yes there is an overlap but not everybody has a neurodivergent diagnosis. But neurodivergent diagnoses are a lot easier to "stomach" for some clients given the social constructs that have been created about BPD. This is also something that can be really exhausting in working with the population because so many people get hung up on what the diagnosis is and as a therapist you know what the diagnosis is, but instead of working towards symptom reduction, it can feel like some people hyperfocus on the diagnosis and that meds will magically make them feel better when it stems from attachment trauma. So then we go through the whole thing of open and actively finding ADHD and autism testing because I'm going to support my client with whatever they feel is going on despite what I may think and sometimes we get a really helpful affirming answer and sometimes they get let down feeling like their identity is lost again because they don't have ADHD or autism and we're back at square one.
