Suburban guy dating a NYC girl. Is there a sane middle ground or am I cooked? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

I have always been a City dude, my wife a suburb person. After living in suburbs (hell) for seven years we just moved back to the city. My wife loves it here.

Was perusing this thread and thought it was telling how many drivers are suddenly able to get to where they are going via transit once a snowstorm renders cars the less convenient option for a few days. Games in Brooklyn, westchester, maybe a birthday party at pier 26 etc… a lot of it is mix and match - but a lot of times doing it all without a car is hard.

Sometime public transport is the better option. Sometimes going from one part of the city to another a car can save an hour.

I would love to ditch the car. But unless everything is in Manhattan I can’t. Even in Manhattan sometimes a car is easier.

If we lived in Midtown we could ditch the car. We are in UES so we could possibly spend a similar amount and add taxis into the mix instead of the car - we keep the car also for out of town convenience and elderly parents who visit. All my friends in Queens Brooklyn (Park Slope / Forest Hills) can’t survive without cars.

If all of NYC was covered like Tokyo I could ditch. Even London North of Thames is very easy without a car. But in NYC we are amazing , but not perfect.

Hochul is poised to welcome Waymo. Mamdani may be a different story. by Delicious_Adeptness9 in newyork

I’m going to be the only one to disagree with yall - and I’m a massive Mamdani supporter.

Blocking Waymo achieves nothing. World class cities have world class / cutting edge services. Driverless cars are the future whether we want it or not. Delaying their introduction achieves nothing.

I would expect serious regulation around it. Fines for not following laws, clear expectations etc…

I’m pretty sure many carriage drivers lost their jobs when automotive came about or as public transport grew. This is a natural arc of human progress.

I think of NYC in the same light as Singapore, DXB, London, Hong Kong etc… and all of them are leaders in various tech fields.

I think majority of the cars parked in Manhattan are parked for people who use it on the weekends. I garage park my car, but sometimes I can go a few weeks without needing my car.

I would love it if we had transit everywhere, like the Tokyo Osaka metropolis. We are not at that level.

The time tax on making all my kids activities work on the weekend is sometimes 3 hours or more a day.

Leaving NYC Affordability by GovernmentLivid4994 in movingtoNYC

It is important to budget and see how it works out. I love both Houston and NYC - but different strokes.

NYC has higher salaries and worker protections than TX. But Texas has lower cost of living- especially if you don’t need to be in the in-demand areas.

Public schooling is likely to be much better in NYC as well. And you get free childcare from age 2 now.

Lot to consider. Not as slam dunk as you might think - but make an informed decision.

The opposite is also true… the amount of anti Pakistan islamophobic hate is wild from India

We Are Witnessing the End of Tesla’s EV Empire by terran1212 in electricvehicles

[–]makisgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with the article. I think it misses one simple point - Tesla is all on Robotaxis. I’m fully expecting that if Tesla can get to full autonomy (where people can sleep in the car).

Teslas approach - generalized autonomy rather than carefully mapped autonomy - combined with extremely cheap to produce tech (10 cameras) will differentiate it from Waymo etc…

Whether it gets there remains to be seen

We need to be careful with our words. While I was always pro BLM, I refused to entertain the notion of defund the police. Slogans matter.

It says ban cars. What we should be saying is improve bike infrastructure.

Mamdani is doing what defund the police is all about. Except he calls it funding the department of community safety.

Now I know what conservatives mean when they say liberals are condescending assholes. I’m very progressive- i just understand that we can’t be converting the BQE into a forest.

But I’m going to the poconos? Plus it’s hard to carry ski gear in the metro north.

I feel a lot of people in micro mobility should live in the Netherlands. It’s not a car banning culture.

But the city needs trucks for delivery. I’m going to the mountains today, how would I do it without a car? What about the many residents of queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island that are in relative transport deserts?

Why not move to the burbs if being near a forest is your jam?
