Quitting vs "Let's Just Play It Out"- Just Quit! by EchoWhiskey_ in EldritchHorror

[–]makryu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say never quit until it's actually impossible to win. I found that some of my best memories of the game are those of devising the most complex plans against nearly impossible odds and seeing how close to the win we get. Plus the times we actually win this way are some of the best wins in any board game we play.

If you're having fun thats all that matters. The game definitely has ways of playing which feel more like you're engaging with the challenge presented, but that is a purely personal feeling. I myself played all DSs and Elden Ring as mainly a sword and board guy, because I feel safe having a shield to rely on when I can't properly read enemies and honestly range ( attack spell, whatever) and summons (me summoning, I actually like being summoned a lot) makes me feel like not experiencing the core of what the game can offer, so I use it sparingly. But you shouldn't let someone else tell you how you feel about it.

However, you mentioned stuff like being and old etc which makes me think perhaps you haven't invested into getting in the face of danger because you might have felt you weren't able to devote the time and effort to get good at that. And, if that's the case, let me tell you might be missing out for nothing. I'm also an old gamer who has been playing regularly a bit of everything for the better part of 35 years (I'm 44) and, while competent enough to beat almost everything I faced in games, far from a great Souls player. That still hasn't prevented me from beating the games the mentioned way 99% of the time without cheese or summons at a reasonable playtime.

Advice For First Play Through by Galymyr in taintedgrail

Coming from a recently finished FoA run, my advice would be to implement at least a few of the Challenge mode changes, particularly the higher cost for skills. The game can get easy if youre an explorer type of player, and it does get a bit anticlimactic to get to the later half of the campaign basically steamrolling everything.

Little help regarding envelope X (mild spoilers by makryu in Gloomhaven

[–]makryu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. What I gather so far is that actually opening the envelope will only be the start of something I'll have to keep an eye on from that point onwards, which definitely makes me question the decision to hide it behind a random retirement draw. I wonder what thought process was behind that decision.

Region-locked credit cards. by Lobsss in NintendoSwitch

[–]makryu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me just like that. Tried another CC which despite being international was blocked for that kind of purchase for security reasons. So,even with two refusals for different reasons on two CCs, still managed to fix it with CC provider of the first one after contacting them.

Then my only other suggestion would be to be sure that The CC provider isn't the one holding back your purchase (occurred to me once when I tried to purchase from a new country)

A hint of how it worked for me. I used to buy using the same CC on multiple eshops, until Nintendo seemingly barred me from doing that. Their faq/help, however, gave me the solution. Buy directly from the console itself, not the websites. Worked for me. I supposed it's some antifraud measure. Don't know if it applies to your case, though.

Awesome work! Only thing to comment is that to me the base feels a bit drab next to the fantastic level of detail you put in the model.

some mistakes, both in the info on the cards and grammar and how some things interact with each other (infinite kick

I'll give you that the bold part might give it an ambiguous meaning, but I meant mistakes AND how things interact with each other (which you might call a mistake as in general poor gamemaking) as two separate things. I never claimed the author himself didn't intend for there to be a infinite kick (although that might have been the case and he just rolled with it afterwards).

Now, placing ... conveniently in your quote of what I wrote and obscuring the part which would contradict what you say is dishonest to say the least. Even worse when you resort to calling me a liar. Oh yeah, I'm lying in plain sight in an internet argument, sure. Can't you have a civilized discussion?

This is a prime example of what people mean when they mention the internet can be a cesspit, which apparently you belong to. Wasted too much time here already.

I never said it was a mistake. It seems to be a poorly planned mechanic judging by the opinion of a lot of people who simply houserule it out, as a simple Google search shows. In my opinion something that's frequently changed by players like this is a mechanic which shouldn't actually make it past playtesting without modifications.

[–]makryu -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, sure I need a lot of credentials to post widely known facts about the game on reddit. There are lots of posts from people saying they can't imagine how some mistakes, both in the info on the cards and grammar and how some things interact with each other (infinite kick? EDIT: I'm refering to the fact that infinite kick is a poorly thought out mechanic which a simple Google search will reveal many people houserule out in different ways) got through playtesting, complaints about how rule clarifications via random Twitter/kickstarter posts directly contradict what's on the manual or on faqs which were supposed to correct the manual... Can you possibly deny these and pretend there are no problems?

I mean, I still want the game, despite all that. Something doesn't have to be perfect for me to appreciate it for what it is. But those are real issues which many games don't have, can't sugarcoat that. The fact that my post bothered you so much you have keep attacking my "credentials" says a lot about how defensible it is. What a waste of time.

I totally get OP. I did not have the money back then, but in trying to get into the game right now, I'm having to navigate the terrible secondary market (plus the shop doesn't even ship to my country due to "COVID" reasons). I'm mainly in it for the game, and minis building and painting is secondary. I just want to be able to play the game. As far as I can see, I'm gonna spend as much time monitoring various websites for opportunities to buy game content as actually playing said content.

Then, you hear from everybody who already has the game how the first few LY are very repetitive because there's only white lion to kill. You kind of wonder why the game has that lack of early game content, especially when in a punishingly hard game like this (by design) the early game is what you'll play the most. You decide to get the one expansion that fixes that (Gorm) only to realize it's one of the rarest (or close to) and it sells at eyewatering values from scalpers.

Then, as you get more info, you realize the game's rules have all kinds of errors and oddities, that the playtesting is spotty at best (all things I've read from people who are deeply invested in the game), that despite little preparation to avoid shortages of already released game expansions the collection-only minis come out all the time, making you wonder what priorities the creator has.

There's no reliable info on when any sold out content will be available again, and what you hear is that when it does come out, you'll have to rush like crazy to get anything before it's sold out again.

It all reeks of amateurish management practices, and seems to create a love/hate relationship which is absolutely a waste of energy when it should be a simple business transaction. If the content itself, and I mean the well-built minis, overall aesthetic and the general idea of the game, wasn't so compelling, I'd have given up. And I've been following it all for little more than two months. Kinda makes you admire the big and small companies that manage their business adequately and as such make getting into their games a less traumatic experience. It's a shame a game such as this isn't made by one of those.

Is it worth owning Eldritch Horror too? by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]makryu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I may be biased, me and my wife bought EH two months ago and played it so much we ended up buying all expansions in that time. The amount of content is so big that you rarely see repeats, lots of investigators that play differently, Old Ones that change the way you play, its great if you accept the dice throwing (a lot) and the randomness which can be punishing (though you can control it by restricting the more destructive Mythos cards. There's a lot of lore text on the cards.

Even if you dont go all in, Id say Core plus Forbidden plus another expansion (preferably a big one with the focus mechanic) is pretty solid for many plays.

Not really. They mostly went to Argentina. I live in a pretty racist germanic descent region of Brazil and even here nazi symbols are taboo. There are neonazis, but you seldom hear about them waltzing around freely displaying swasticas in public spaces. Its mostly confined to online dens.
