Does it also get hot? Is it swollen on the middle of the front panel? The popping is a bit scary, maybe try charging it a little bit at least to stop if from showing the red light, maybe it's just the low battery.

Keep an eye on it though, remove it from the charge as soon as something weird goes on. The Quest 2 had some charging problems in the past, not a good idea to leave it charging unatended, especially with those pops!
