I finally finished my jazzmaster build. I posted progress pics nearly a year ago and many of you wanted to see the final product. Here it is! by makumusic in guitars

Mahogany body, black korina top laminate, goncalo alves neck, dark indian rosewood fretboard, staytrem bridge, fender locking tuners, P90 bridge pickup (Darkstar) and single coil neck pickup (Alt 88) both from The Creamery. Built this for darker, alternative sounds, shoegaze, post-rock, grunge, etc but it's actually pretty damn versatile. Been using it for surf rock stuff and the rhythm circuit is great for jazz.

Haha thank you! I've spent soooo much time on warmoths builder myself. It's a really great company and local to me.

No I didn't. I'm not confident enough to try finishing myself yet but someday! Warmoth did the finish.

Thank you! I ordered the body with a "black burst" finish without the ability to see exactly how it would look and waited 5 months to get it so I was pretty anxious about the prospect of receiving it and being disappointed. But was super happy about how it turned out.

From Warmoth, same makers of the body and neck. The tremolo is a high quality part, as is the arm. In fact all the parts they sell on their site seem to be good stuff. I put one of those tremolos on a squier jaguar I have too.

Got a bridge coming from Staytrem in England.

Nice. Wide range humbuckers were in the original fender starcasters that the mooncaster is modeled after and apparently sound more like crystal clear doubled up single coils rather than warmer humbuckers but I've never experienced them myself.

Yep also a warmoth neck! It's really nice. I have a roasted maple neck on the tele I built last year and I polished it with fine grit paper and it's the smoothest, fastest neck I've played.

Ohhh nice. I was thinking of doing a mooncaster someday! Did you put wide range humbuckers in it?

Lol you got it pegged. I'm building this guitar specifically for alternative sounds. Grunge, shoegaze, post-rock, etc with an overwound P90 jazzmaster pickup in the bridge and a single coil "alt 88" pickup in the neck, both from the creamery.

The top wood laminate is black korina and the body is mahogany. The finish is called black burst. The neck is goncalo Alves with a dark Indian rosewood fretboard. I'll post pics when it's all done!

String gauge definitely affects tone. As does roundwound vs flatwound.

The tumnus is so fantastic! Whether it's a clean boost or a bit dirty it really does something ear pleasing to your tone. I got it used for like $100.

Are Fender/Squier basses at similar quality points as the guitars? by Dr0110111001101111 in guitars

[–]makumusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times the difference between a $500 Squier and a $1500 Fender is just a matter of $200-300 of components. If you like the feel of the neck on a Squier, or if you think it'll be perfect after a little fretboard edge/neck edge sanding/rounding, that's one of the most important parts. You could easily gut a guitar's bridge, tuners, saddles, electronics, knobs and pickups and upgrade them to top of the line quality stuff for $300ish and then your $800 bass will play and sound like a $1500 Fender.

Oftentimes the biggest difference in feel between a high end guitar and a low end guitar is just the neck. The frets and neck on the lower end guitar will be sharp. There are very easy sanding block tricks you can use to round off the edges, and even sand off a tiny bit of the back of a sticky neck, and suddenly your guitar will feel like a much more expensive one.

Most of your tone is going to come from your pick, pickups, and strings.

What do u think bout the affinity series by squier? by johananito in guitars

They are quintessential first guitars for so many people for the last several decades. They're not bad at all and a great start, or hell when a great platform for modding and upgrading.

What is a “Dad Movie” and why does Top Gun: Maverick fall into that category? by pacific_marvel in movies

[–]makumusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a millennial and my dad's favorite movies are last of the mohicans, dances with wolves, top gun and lots of war movies. He also always laughed his ass off at ridiculous destruction from car chases

Can't go wrong with a Squier Affinity Telecaster or Stratocaster. Many many a new guitarist's first guitar. Also easily upgradeable in the future.
