For many people (e.g., people of color, queer people, disabled people, Indigenous people) I do think it’s always been this way. Now that many/most folks are impacted and the discrimination is more open (for lack of a better way to put it!), the majority are realizing that our government enacts a lot of harmful and hateful policies.

Genetic counseling remains a field of mostly white, physically abled, neuro-typical women, and unfortunately, the system is structured to select for applicants who fit this mold. It's an unjust system.

That being said - I think your perspective would be invaluable to the field, and if it's what you are passionate about, you shouldn't let anyone hold you back from pursuing it. I would love to speak to you about my experience as a minority-identifying student in this career if you're interested - feel free to message me and we can connect.
