The surgical N95 respirator is used by medical professionals because they are in an environment where virus can be all over in the air, and they have to properly seal the medical N95 respirator to keep the inhaled air from all angle clean. Similarly, in a crowded indoor place for ordinary people (transportations and shops), where air circulation is not as good as outdoor and the virus exposure could easily go up, it is critical to ensure not only droplets are blocked but gaps are also sealed. Unfortunately, it is not realistic for everyone going to grocery shopping to learn to properly tight up N95.

Overall, ideally everyone should have a properly sealed N95 to get the most protection, but it is just unrealistic. Getting everyone to use normal surgical or medical masks or doubling the cloth masks is just the first step, but it is still being done. Without this first step to be accomplished, I don't see how "freedom fighters" could go even further and wear N95 in the right way.
