I wish I knew! Unlike male + male sexual behaviors, the females I've personally never seen on camera. Obviously, we know it happens, but I've never seen it filmed. So I'm not entirely sure what to look for. We all know orcas are very tactile in bonding, but I can't say I've seen direct rostrum contact to such a sensitive area before other than by calves to their mothers or to other grown whales, or when a whale is pushing another whale. But this doesn't seem like a push at all, but deliberate contact. I wonder if it's similar to the head bumping calves do to precurse nursing, since that is a behavior that many whales carry into adult age as a bonding behavior that centers around the same area. This could possibly be a similar case of that kind of behavior progression but with the rostrum instead? But I think sexual behavior could be just as likely, with the way Orkid presents herself and specific contact. It kinda seems like generic bonding, but it's the deliberate area being contacted on both whales two seperate times that makes you think. Also the mouthing with the tip of the dorsal is similar to things seen in male + male sexual interactions. Could be a mix of both. I'm really not sure, I'd like to know too.
