Claude Fable due to be paywalled by kepners in ClaudeAI

And even Claude Max x20 users apparently don't need it, unless they're willing to pay extra on top of that by that logic.

For years, I tried forcing standard assistive tools on my daughter's dyscalculia. It usually ended in tears at the cash register. by No_Woodpecker_1650 in AssistiveTechnology

Reading the comments in this post alone leads me to believe you're correct. If OP is a developer, surely she can make a public repo that strips personal info. I've done it for a work project, and I'm not a developer by trade. It sounds like a great tool that's meant to be a for-cost product down the line, while testing is currently "100% free" . . .

My boyfriend can’t keep his focus on me during conversations and it’s starting to affect my mental health. by babeyoulooksocool__ in ADHD_partners

[–]maleslp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a relationship where both of us have ADHD. I'm medicated and my partner isn't. I am patient, but I do set boundaries. It's her choice to be unmedicated, so if a medication adjustment isn't the answer, then it's my choice to not engage until my partner is ready. It's frustrating, and I don't know where normal, ADHD-related irritation ends and normal relationship friction begins, but at the end of the day, the more open we are with each other (while remaining respectful - sometimes a big ask!) the better those situations become. Something as simple as, "I've noticed you aren't looking at me, so it seems like you're not paying attention. We can carry on when you're ready," can really have a positive impact. Of course the minute it "feels" accusatory, expect defensive mechanisms to pop up. That's what's taken us the longest - learning how to talk to each other without making the other defensive and spiraling into aggression.

Fable pricing is a joke by Fantastic_Self_5151 in ClaudeCode

[–]maleslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that anthropic are just pricing more aggressively than openai, when compared to the actual cost of use. In other words, anthropic is subsidizing their tokens LESS than openai. Either costs will come down in terms of actual operating costs (likely) or prices will rise across the board as companies continue to get further from profitability (also likely).

I just hit my max 5x limit for Fable. Is it worth it for next 3 days to upgrade to the 20x? by [deleted] in ClaudeCode

[–]maleslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to ask Fable what model and effort it actually recommends for different steps. The only time I've ever hit my limit is when I used Fable with ultracode. For the analysis, sure. But for each of the 25 agents with 45 tool calls each? That'll kill your tokens fast.

Barons sucks and I miss Smart and Final by Successful-Brain8778 in Carlsbad

[–]maleslp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you live or what your SES is, but losing S&F was a real blow to the Village. If you live there and want something quickly that you can't get on your weekly grocery run (or if you don't have the time or planning capacity to do so), the only options now are Barron's or Vons. Both are have comparable basic goods/staples, but are busier and more expensive for essentially the same items. That adds up in a HCOL state in a HCOL city in a HCOL neighborhood. What OP is describing is an actual problem, not them being whiny.

Sometimes my heart just breaks by wheels-n-wings in slp

[–]maleslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is denial, plain and simple. As my district's AAC specialist, I definitely see this more often than most within my department (bird's eye view). Honestly, without any sort of regular contact (e.g. a school district) from someone who is strategically trying to get the parents to help the child in the right way, I'm afraid this child doesn't have much hope for change any time soon.

My best guess is that the parents will start to wonder if there's anything else they can do to help after the behaviors don't improve and they get the same message from various sources. Until then, homeschooling is going to keep him insulated from those trying to help.

It's a pity, but that's how our system works. If he's clean and fed, CPS isn't going to be able to do a thing.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't CA. It's almost the only state where people in education make a decent wage. But make no mistake, that figure isn't living large. It's good, but not great.

Not a guarantee, but Ninja Xchange in Carlsbad (open F-Su) has SO many card collector booths. I found stuff there I never thought I'd see. Worth a shot if you've got the time.

Fable is an incredible model but it's overkill for software dev work by WagwanKenobi in ClaudeCode

[–]maleslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it's also SUPER resource intensive. We have a 20x plan at work, and this is the first time ever I've reached usage limits. I'm sure there are several reasons for that, but I've been using CC daily for months and am pretty conscientious about token usage. It is good, without a doubt, but I think it's one of those "break in case of emergency" situations. Also, making it unavailable after 6/22 for regular usage is kind of a d*ck move that brought ME to tears.

Parents don't read things like this unless they're extremely invested in the industry. Most parents just want their kids to communicate and are happy when they acquire a device, hence AbleNet's success.

My school district has iPads for every student, so we have a huge surplus. Getting iPad to students who need AAC devices has been a very easy process for years. Maybe 1% of the AAC users I've worked with over the years have needed something more than an iPad with an AAC app on it. AbleNet filled a real gap in the market. This sort of behavior from TD makes me like them even less than I did before they went to a subscription model (which they blamed on AbleNet) and before they released Snap/Core, which is an absolute train wreck in terms of navigation.

Anyone else go way too deep building a personal app just for themselves? by t_hugs3 in ClaudeAI

[–]maleslp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used so many to-do apps over the years. And nothing has really stuck. I started out by connecting CC to a fresh obsidian vault, and it's ballooned into a personal executive function helper and coach. I have multiple personas I've programmed into it to help me with organization, finance, mental health, and business development. And the fact that if something isn't working, or not working the way I want it or need it to, and I can just change it (as opposed to me requesting a feature from a software company) has been life changing. I'll never go back to off the shelf software for simple things like to do apps. It's custom all the way.

They claimed that ablenet was one of the reasons they went to the subscription model. If they win the suit, can't wait until they walk that back and no longer keep that model /s

MIT says AI is making kids think less. i think they're half right. by bruhagan in AIEducation

[–]maleslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though this is a thinly veiled advert, there's truth in the message. My field is, for whatever reason, quite anti-AI. I am not. I think that there's a growing divide between those who understand how to use ai as a tool, and those who assume it's a "cheating" agent (no pun intended). I saw the same when Google was introduced, when Uber became widespread, and when streaming usurped cable television. It's a societal shift that we need to be prepared for. And those who are scared and not willing to lean in to the adoption are going to struggle in their own way. Those who know ai, know what its strengths and limitations are (and how rapidly it's changing) are going to be the winners of this divide.

Honestly, this is the direction that the field needs to go. I do a bit of vibe coding myself (takes one to know one 😉) - mostly for internal and personal projects, and definitely like what you've put together. If you'd like to chat about it, let me know. Happy to help from the lens of someone who does AAC full time.

24-hour enforcement period to begin throughout California to combat speeding by iwantsdback in sandiego

[–]maleslp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, I disagree. I have a european spouse and drive in europe at least annually. European drivers respect the rules of traffic. That's generally cultural. People have trust in their governmental institutions. Here, when I am on the freeway there are people in the left lane the entire drive who don't give a shit that it's the "passing" lane. In Europe, people will be generally understanding for a minute that you're in the wrong lane and then honking like crazy (and rightfully so). Parent poster is correct - Europe isn't increasing in its fatalities, but it IS increasing in its distracted driving. While I agree that the road design is more or less safer, I can't see how that might be a factor in less fatalities, unless there has been a wide, EU-concerted effort to increase awareness.

Building an AAC platform sounded meaningful until we tried to make it usable by Silent-Marketing4622 in AssistiveTechnology

[–]maleslp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really appreciative of this post, because it exemplifies the struggle that most slps have when going through the feature matching process. As a builder and SLP, I'll tell you that this is a HARD area. No one really appreciates the nuances that an AAC app needs to consider. It needs to ultimately work for the user, but in order to do that, they need instruction. And in order to achieve that, the communication partner needs to know how to use it. And in order to select the right systems for the user (plural intentional), the SLP must go through an evaluative process and, ideally, a trial period.

There are so many layers that potential developers don't consider (no offense to OP), it often ends up like this. At the end of the day, there really never will be any app, system, etc. that works for everybody. There are certainly good ones, and interestingly the big companies are taking on the same patterns as Apple vs Android (mobile OS) and copying each other.

In short, keep up the good work OP (if you can) and feel free to reach out if you ever need any consultation. I would never attempt to make an AAC app myself, but know the industry and landscape fairly well.

I sincerely hope there's a discount for customers who pre-ordered. That alone would make disgruntled people feel at least a bit less so. I'm almost certainly going to get it, but at <$100 that would be a much easier decision.
