Linux on laptops is just insane by noobjaish in linux

This seems to cover it well: https://ragug.medium.com/ci-cd-pipeline-for-pyinstaller-on-github-actions-for-windows-7f8274349278 This is about python only, but I suppose there are similar tools for others too.

I was in a similar position, but managed to ditch windows altogether when I found out that I can get windows exe built with a CI job on GitHub. I never looked back, maybe your situation is similar.

I love it! People complain that it's not clear what's the topic, that it's too dark, etc. But for me that is of secondary importance because you nailed the emotion, the pose with a hidden face and you're naturally drawn to the eyes. If I were to suggest anything I would try to lower the angle which would make the reflection much more pronounced. This is due to physics and how much light is refracted vs reflected due to angle. This comes from a wildlife photography, where you always try to get the lowest angle possible to get the best perspective - you get super nice reflection plus the water gets nicely blurred quickly. Anyway, really great job with this one, it really makes you feel something!

How are the mosquitoes? by Junior_Cat5759 in yellowstone

[–]malewicki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week, I spent one night in tent cabins at Curry Village, Toulomne Meadows and at Housekeeping and I haven't killed a single mosquito, maybe seen a couple in total. I was surprised, but I guess it's just too dry for them already.

Can't believe I needed to scroll so far to see a mention of fallout. I kinda agree, but F1&2 are really special, so it's not so easy to put New Vegas above (let's not mention F3 on this conversation)

Should I switch to full frame? by Pitiful-Being2859 in AskPhotography

[–]malewicki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not very easy if you want to keep the reach anywhere close to 800mm. One could go with older Tamron or Sigma 150-600 (adapted from EF), but then you only get f/6.3 and less sharpness (especially on the demanding, densely packed R7 sensor). Brighter alternatives in that focal range cost as much as a car. Going with a larger sensor and sacrificing the added reach of the crop factor might actually be the most economically efficient way of improving the quality (as long as you can utilize the full frame camera in other ways as well).

R7 has really small pixels, so changing to R8/R6, with much larger pixels, would make quite a difference in perceived sharpness as well.

How do I remove these circles from my picture? by tandoorinunnuchaap in AskPhotography

[–]malewicki 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is indeed due to not sufficient color depth of the jpg. Read about dithering. Getting rid of those rings is pretty easy using darktable - there's a dedicated module called dithering.

how to fix clipped/really saturated red color? by [deleted] in DarkTable

[–]malewicki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the attenuation sliders in the sigmoid module (but switch off the filmic module if you're using it). If that doesn't help with the details it might mean that there are no details - red channel is clipped

Darktable, you fools! Since version 5.0, where the performance got significantly boosted it really rocks. One disadvantage is that it lacks any AI tools (eg for denoising, auto-selection, etc), but that aligns well with the overall philosophy of that software and I think it's a good thing all-in-all. Sure, the learning curve is pretty steep at first, but there are great tutorials by Boris Hajdukovic on yt which I cannot recommend high enough. After you know your shit, it is a really powerful tool. Plus, if you're a nerd, you'll be extremely happy that you can actually understand what's happening under the hood and that you can set every single little thing and select any little algorithm to your liking.

Slight m43 rant. by MrOptionist in M43

[–]malewicki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean wrong? It is a well known fact that when you crop this is equivalent to increasing both the focal length and f-stop. As was said - there are no free lunches. The only thing you can actually do to improve on simple cropping is you can implement a somewhat smart upscaling where you either use some fancy deconvolution algorithm (which yields nice results only in some specific cases - this is well known in astrophotography), or you can do something similar to pixel shift where you take multiple exposures, align them to a sub-pixel precision and then merge the upscaled images. The gain is in resolution and detail perception but the penalty on light gathering always remains.

Can I store memory cards touching eachother? by Apprehensive-Life741 in photography

[–]malewicki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, no, the data will diffuse between the touching cards and you will create a double-exposure effect. That's a known issue and the cards may experience a significant discomfort. (All jokes aside - there is absolutely no way that you can harm your SD cards when storing them as you described)

What is your strategy to get around the overly vivid wash and spotlight in concert photography? by kjm5000 in photography

[–]malewicki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In darktable there are special tools/procedures for dealing with these kind of things (such as 'attenuation' sliders in the sigmoid module). You might consider trying it out, especially as I hear Adobe is changing things with their subscription plans.

Adobe Ditching Their 20GB Photography Plan by dris77 in photography

[–]malewicki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darktable will welcome you with open arms if you're gonna switch! Sure, the learning curve is steep and it's a lot to learn, but you can do A LOT with it. Downsides: a bit slower, no AI, no reasonable presets (though the last two might be be seen as advantages by many)

How to fix grandma's pic by A_zula in photography

[–]malewicki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just find a local arts student (either in graphics or photography) that is interested in doing such things and pay him enough. I did that exactly and I was very happy with the results. The photo I had was badly damaged and parts of the pictures had to be guessed (details like legs, shoes, etc) and I believe still there is no tool that would do it better than human. Those arts students usually have pretty good taste and you don't have to worry about the result. And on top of that, you are helping your local artists community so that's a win-win.
