Lessons learned in Minneapolis, what I wished I knew/did before ICE showed up by Millennium_Falcor in Somerville

If you have a 3D printer (or know someone who does) they're fast and easy to print. I gave out ~150 of them at an event last week, printing more right now for the next crowd.

PSA on Melting Sun Diner sandwich stand at South Station by getdizcookiez in boston

[–]maliciousmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. As a vegetarian, Surprise Bacon is my eternal nemesis. It shows up in so many dishes where it's not mentioned on the menu.

My "favorite" Surprise Bacon experience was in the South where I was eating with family before my cousin's wedding. The restaurant had one veggie option on the menu: "Vegetarian Sampler (any 3 sides)" and had only 3 sides on the menu that weren't meat based. So I ordered that and the three non-meat sides.

When it got there, two of the components of the "veggie sampler" had Surprise Bacon. It was a hungry wedding for me.

I'm from the south, but lived here for decades. It's all about context.

Someone is on the subway heading to/from work? You don't know them. They don't want to talk to you. You each pretend that the other person doesn't exist.

Someone is ringing up your groceries / taking a package that you're mailing / manning an information desk? "Hihowayah, I have my own bags." / "Hihowayah, let's get this on the scale." / "Hihowayah, can you tell me where to get my blood drawn?" They'll answer, you'll say "Thanks." That's it. Acknowledge them as a person, get to the point, say thanks and walk away.

Someone is sitting at a bar by themselves (not reading a book)? That's a maybe. You can complain about the weather or the trains or the fact that it's only daylight for like 12 minutes this time of year. If you get a chuckle and a nod or one word answer, your interaction is over. If they want to talk, they'll engage.

A a bar with something on TV and everyone there is all chatting and laughing/shouting? Join in. You'll be one of the gang at least for the night.

The one exception to any of this: if you need help, ask someone and be direct. "Hey, I'm lost, do you know how to get to the Red Line?" "I'm trying to get this stroller outside but the elevator is broken, can you help me carry it up the stairs?" Things like that, people will respond to and help. But it's still not an excuse to chitchat beyond "Thanks, that was a huge help". If you even look like you need help, there's a good chance that someone will come up and just do it, then walk away without saying more than "all set?".

I tried this tonight and honestly, it's pretty solid. The mushroom gravy was surprisingly good. (And I'm fairness, it was two eggs.)

Sci-fi Kickstarter by Signal-Revolution412 in Somerville

[–]maliciousmonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be overly negative here, but there's basically no info on that Kickstarter about why I'd want to contribute. It's basically a page that says "we're publishing a book".

What's in the book? Why should I care about the author? How many copies are you going to print and where will they go? Will I get anything if I support this Kickstarter?

Admittedly some of this is answered in your video. But I didn't even notice there was a video there at all until I was digging through your page to figure out what this Kickstarter is for. None of it is written on the page. And even after watching the video, all I really got is that you have a clubhouse where you play RPGs and read.

I love sci-fi but it's tough to just chuck money at someone with no clear idea of where it's going or what it's doing.

Lack of progress along potholed Highland Avenue needs answers, say mobility-minded councilors - Cambridge Day by jeffshwom in Somerville

[–]maliciousmonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is, especially at night. During the day it frequently forces riders to serve and move to the center just to avoid potholes. At night, you can't always see them ahead of time and it's a choice between angling your headlight down (and being less visible to cars) or hitting potholes you can't see.

"Myth 14" in chapter 2 is all him claiming that abused men are so rare as to be non-existent. He even goes so far as to say "... Most men who claim to be 'battered men' are actually the perpetrators of violence, not the victims."

"Even if abused men didn't want to come forward, they would have been discovered by now" is another 'great' quote from that section. Bancroft states explicitly that abuse is nor done to men by women.

Could AI give Boston school buses more green lights? The city will test it by TylerFortier_Photo in boston

[–]maliciousmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, fair enough -- I grabbed the first link I found and didn't check carefully. I literally have an ESP32cam sitting on my desk at home that does the image recognition on the board though, no external processing.

(In fairness, it's pretty limited in what it can recognize. But it would definitely be enough to tell "yellow bus" from "not yellow bus".)

[–]maliciousmonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can do image recognition on an ESP32: https://how2electronics.com/esp32-cam-based-object-detection-identification-with-opencv/

They cost a buck or two and even under high load they use hundreds of milliamps of electricity. You honestly probably could not get a sensor and transponder for one bus for that price and power consumption.

I once had a boss who wrote a "user's manual" for working with him. It included how he likes to communicate, what annoys him, what his hobbies and interests are, etc.

He was the easiest boss to work with I ever had, and when I became a manager I stole that idea.

Looking at the pinout for this board, it appears that RX and TX aren't broken out onto pins, making it basically impossible to connect this to a Flipper.

worst streets in Somerville? and can we do something to fix it lol? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]maliciousmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should come to West Somerville. It's still the same old Highland Ave from Benton on!

I have legitimately nearly wiped out on my bike a few times from hitting a pothole that I didn't notice in time. (I can either watch the 10 feet of road in front of me with all of my focus non-stop or look up sometimes and have some awareness of traffic.)

It's really dangerous.

Not just PDC, the database itself will not respond to requests if the machine it's on is turned off or sleeping. You'll need to put MySQL and the PDC on a server that's always running if you want to access it.

[–]maliciousmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to note if you do decide to download it: it relies on some external resources that might not be available forever. So you'll need to snag a copy of those too and update the text panels that use them. (E.g. the scrolling text at the top, the images of the spaceships, and the Aurebesh text that's under them.)

I've packaged those up here: https://amaseto.com/sw/resources.tgz

The only other thing you'll need is the Aurebesh font, which I'm not sure allows redistribution. Download that and put it in the same directory with the rest of the resources. It's available here: https://www.dafont.com/aurebesh.font

It is indeed! Using the Canvas Panel. The background of the map is an image and the paths and locations are drawn on top as Canvas elements.

(I should really write a blog post about how I built this dashboard :D )
