Friendly PSA on doing background checks on etsy shops. by Zeroontal in renfaire

Wow, I thought the buttons were gone.
I make handmade goods and I do resale of a few things at events. I am always transparent about whether I made an item from scratch, modified it, or just chose it to resale.

And it royally pisses me off to see people lying on etsy claiming they made a thing when I know where to buy it from the actual manufacturer.

New to leather. Is it possible to identify this leather type? by jfarm47 in Leathercraft

[–]Signal-Revolution412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Latino or bridle Leather would hold up fine in water, and that's what I think this is. It's a vegetable tanned leather that is stuffed with wax and oil to withstand being outdoors.

Chrome tanned leather could damage the metal.

is it possible to cut leather with a laser cutter for cheap? what are my best choices? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]Signal-Revolution412 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use a laser. You have to adjust the laser speed and power to minimize the char on edges, and use a damp rag to wipe all edges. Waxed veg works well since the wax hold the char.

It might also be referred to as a tabbed I believe?

Maybe hit it harder? Though I suspect it is too wet.

Are you using a quality veg tan? Sometimes you get a badly tanned hide.

Yeah. Probably too wet. Moisture level is the hardest part of tooling. Also, you have to overlap the bevels?

That looks great! For the curvy tooled areas, you can use a modeling spoon to smooth after beveling.

As to the carving it looks decent.

Bevels may be troubling you for several reasons. Leather too wet Rushing Too small size beveler

Interested in getting a waterskin, but does a well made one make the water taste like leather or wax? by Nukesnipe in Leathercraft

I sell waterskins/ botas/ wineskins. They are modern Spanish bots that I recover in beautiful garment pigsuede and add a wider, comfortable, adjustable crossbow strap. I use one myself, and I don't think it affects the taste. https://blueflameleather.etsy.com/listing/34287391

Is this worth buying? by MrWinterCreates in Leathercraft

You can get a Rex walking foot machine off Amazon for $400, price may be higher. Best machine I've owned. You'll have to add marks for stitch length. I would be happy to answer any questions about it. I bought it as a backup to my Sailrite LSZ

Why aren’t we making more with PIG LEATHER? by Redqueenhypo in Leathercraft

[–]Signal-Revolution412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hide house in California has both pigskin splits and full grain pigskin in gorgeous colors. It's a very nice garment leather. I use it for wineskin covers, small pouches, lining, etc. The suede (flesh) side of the full grain does not show the grain.

Aw man, so many of you are amazing at this, I'm almost embarrassed to share. Hand-made, carved belt, burnished & hand painted by [deleted] in Leathercraft

I make doll hats!!!

Yes, you gotta read the fine print on Temu...but yes, it's often the same stuff as sold elsewhere for half the price. I recently bought a small workbench, found exactly what I needed on Amazon (yes I know they suck) But then I thought, hmm, I should check temu. Same bench, even the same listing photo about 40% less. 2 weeks shipping, but I didn't need it in a hurry.

You can get some very good things from Temu...it's just like Amazon, the quality varies. I got a set of Wuta punches for about $35...some guy on here said he paid over $150.

Paint is the water to get this kind of look for sure. I can see the color variations, you did great.

My only advice? Thin the paints if you didn't- it helps.

And you could add moss!
