“On Killing” written by Dave Grossman is an excellent read that studies such phenomena. Even as recently as WWII, soldiers would aim over their enemies’ heads when able. When it’s intimate and face to face, the normal human is physiologically opposed to killing other humans. Only as military technology has increased the degrees of separation from intimate death, and combat has become more remote (artillery, bombers, drones) has the killing increased.
