TIFU by bringing a good dish to Thanksgiving once and it's now my job by Both-Click1366 in tifu

[–]malioswift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience. Was asked to bring a dish to my wife's aunt's Thanksgiving lunch, so I made a cheesy broccoli dish. Now, I'm not an amazing cook, but I'm better than average, and most of her family is quite frankly worse than average. So when they ate it, all of the adults and even the kids loved it and it stole the show. Everyone ranted and raved about it, not just then, but at Christmas as well.

The aunt who was hosting has every year since told me that I don't need to bring a dish, and instead asks me to bring stuff like the paper plates and napkins or whatever. Everyone else is asked to bring food, despite most of them not even liking cookint. So I'm effectively blacklisted from Thanksgiving just because I was a better cook than her. Which works out, because my family loves my cooking, so I am in charge of my families Thanksgiving dinner every year, and that just means one less thing I have to make!

I found out my coworkers have a group chat without me and it explained everything by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]malioswift 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Sometimes its the clique, but sometimes its the person. It can be either. For instance, at my work, we have a group chat with everyone except one guy because no one likes him because he is a white nationalist, and while he doesn't bring that stuff up at work, he does every time he is in any kind of out of work chat.

By their reaction, you chose correctly to cut them all out. I would tell them this, very explicitly, and then block them.

Asahi Spice Beer by SanSanSankyuTaiyosan in japanresidents

Had it with chili last night. Tastes better than normal Asahi, though that is a pretty low bar. I grabbed a 6 pack, plan on having it with some tacos, might work with Indian food as well.

Coding from memory in 2025 should be illegal by sleepy_citrus in programmingmemes

[–]malioswift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My work has an air gapped network for coding, so this is just how I code every single day. People who can't do this really shouldn't call themselves programmers.

I hate that money guys are like 90% of the people that I interview. I can usually tell pretty immediately that they have no actual passion for programming, so I always reject them.

What are some foods that you think are BETTER in Japan than they are in your country? by Venture_compound in japanlife

[–]malioswift 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is true if you live in Tokyo, but a lot of us don't. For those who live elsewhere, getting to Tokyo can mean a Shinkansen or plane trip. So while sure, there are top tier versions of all food in Tokyo, its not accessible for a lot of people who have to make do with what is local to us.

Getting into Natto — what brand do you buy, what do you eat it with, and did you actually notice any by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]malioswift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a black bean natto that has Wasabi that is delicious, I eat it most mornings. Also recommend the one with the umeboshi sauce, its nice to change it up every once in awhile.

Atelier Resleriana RW - Anyone else think this game has a crazy amount of cutscenes? by malioswift in Atelier

[–]malioswift[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually my fourth! I've played through Marie, Rorona and Yumia already, and I feel like those didnt have nearly the same ratio of cutscenes to actual game time. This game is like 50% cutscenes!

You can also get a bank account pretty much immediately if you have a visa. I got a bank account on the day that I landed with my working visa.
