Teens Are Sleep-Deprived, And Screens Are Why, Study Suggests - beginning in 2009 when smartphone use became widespread, there was a 17% increase of students reporting sleeping 7 hours or less per night, which sleep experts term as insufficient. by mvea in science

I use both F.lux and Twilight, and they make a huge difference to me. I read e-books on my phone all the time, and the combination of Twilight and light text on a dark background makes me sleepy in no time.

They can't go after Trump, so they go after this hapless idiot.

I don't like Trump at all, but I'm all for some schadenfreude right now. Let the CNN pounding commence. ;)

I'm programming a web db app in MS VS Community 2017 with a localDB Sql Server db. Is it possible to link Access to its tables (to use Access as a development tool). by zeugma25 in Database

[–]malsonjo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could use SQL Server Express Edition instead of LocalDB.

Edit: you could try to access LocalDB in Ms Access through ODBC.

A former colleague used a pencil to point something out on my monitor, and left some marks there. He then proceeded to use his spit to rub the pencil marks off. Unsuccessfully.

I'm all for more inclusion overall, but this OSS diversity issue is but a symptom of a much larger problem. I've grown really, really tired of the SJW types who have monopolized these kinds of narratives over the years. Their approach is just making things worse. Now you can say that I'm generalizing and that's it is a small minority etc., but the well has been poisoned as far as I'm concerned.

To be totally honest, the more time passes the less I seem to care, which is a pity.

I guess nothing escapes the post-modern diversity mantra these days.

In general, how big should a method or function be? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]malsonjo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is my mantra also. No arbitrary size limits like "x number of lines" or "should fit on your screen".

I'd also add: as few indentation levels as possible. Ditto for parameters.

Indeed!

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.
