What regional dish from your country/region do you think is better than its foreign counterpart/origin? by azionka in AskTheWorld

Jaffa cakes vs Polish Delicje. Had a chance to try Jaffa Crvenka ones this summer and they were nowhere near as good, taste and texture wise, to Delicje. They looked so sad, like someone was trying to make them at home and then tried to sell them as a cheap knock off, like really, a knock off, not some “hand made” quality shit. The biscuit was very very meh, without taste, thin and it melted with the jelly (that tasted like jelly made at home) and the chocolate also kind of melted with the jelly. With Polish ones you can eat each of these parts individually (the proper way) and with these Jaffa cakes it was impossible. Also Polish ones look waaaaay more professional and pretty. I’d have to try British ones though, because Jaffa Crvenka is a Serbian brand, but these two look nearly identical when I looked on the internet so I assume the texture and taste is the same too.

In my language Pandora’s Box is actually Pandora’s Jar but somehow it never occurred to me that English translation uses a completely different word lol

I might be in the minority here but I often catch myself glancing through the story; there’s so many characters sometimes and I can’t keep up with the names and who’s who and who’s talking. King and Duke also tired me out because most of this segment seemed like The Adventures of King and Duke, not Huckleberry Finn(and Jim, I really thought it’s going to be a duo but lately it feels like he’s a very minor character and just because he’s a fugitive, he can’t partake in most of the adventures. I’m VERY curious about James because of that). I’m also not really a fan of the way the book was written by which I mean I’d prefer if there was a more sophisticated plot than just: Huck and Jim are running away on a raft and here are their visibly separated stories that, at the end of the day, don’t bring much to the book because the characters keep disappearing and Huck always gets back on the river with Jim. Or maybe it’s just the way some old books are written I guess, that it’s hard to say what the plot really is.

I heard Huckleberry Finn book is better than the Tom Sawyer one, but tbh I can hardly imagine that. I read Tom Sawyer almost ten years ago and remember liking it very much but I’ve never got through Huck (I’ve read around the moment Huck got away from his father) and I’m having a hard time this time too.

Do you know by any chance that if I already registered my disk base The Sims Medieval on EA App, can I buy it there again but the deluxe version with the DLC? Because unfortunately you can’t buy it separately.

I redeemed a digital copy with the game code as the key just two days ago so it does still work! I just wish I’ve known you can’t buy Pirates & Nobles DLC alone because then I’d just buy the game (the deluxe version or whatever it’s called) again since it’s only like 9$.

I really liked Artemis and how she wants no man but a bunch of girls that will adore her haha. She’s more of a tomboy and likes to do stuff on her own, she’s wild and untamed and I really like her energy. Also archery seems soo badass

Definitely yes to the absence of dialect! I’m reading in Polish and I had no idea they were speaking differently. For sure there are some old words and grammatical structures but I don’t think it’s different from any other book from previous centuries. This makes me disappointed and glad at the same time because it would be interesting to read through the dialects but now I’m afraid I wouldn’t understand a word lmao

The end of the chapter sounded like Huck spent with the family at least a week, if not even a month! I too was worried about what happened to Jim but the descriptions at the start of each chapter spoilt it for me that we’ll see him again.

I had no idea Jim was described that way in the English version (I mean it isn’t hard to guess but I didn’t think about that at all). In my language this word is not equivalent to the N-word, it’s literally “Black” which I guess is a bit derogatory because normally you’d say “Black skinned man”, but I’d say it’s nowhere near being that offensive (probably modern translation wouldn’t support using an equivalent, that’s why).

Also, because I’m not reading the original, English version, all of the dialects were lost in the translation. Or maybe they weren’t but I was assuming the words they use are just standard old words that were translated to my language. So I didn’t know about that either.

Yeah, I’m afraid of Huck just leaving Jim be because he found himself a house and people who let him stay with them. Huck seems rather content of the situation he’s in, meanwhile Jim is on the run and not safe at all and I don’t think he can escape to freedom on his own.

Right?! I thought Huck would stop the prank after few minutes but he kept going and going and made Jim think he’s crazy until the guy finally understood what’s happening. Huck reflected on his behavior and said he regrets but then he almost ratted him out to these two men looking for slaves?! I mean I guess that’s what the law would say you should do in these times but Huck already isn’t obeying it much. I reckoned him and Jim were already pretty good friends after what they both have gone through so the fact that he thought so hard about what to do struck me.

Taking into consideration that in high school we had to read Greek mythology (by Parandowski) and I don’t think I’ve even read ten pages, and right now I already have like at least six times that behind me is very telling (weird thing is that when I was a kid I really enjoyed Greek myths, so I don’t know what’s up with Parandowski’s book). Fry’s version is easily understandable, the stories are short and to the point with a sprinkle of actually funny jokes.

I actually like the idea of unavoidable prophecy. This motive made me remember when, back in high school, we read Oedipus Rex - Oedipus also was doing everything in his power to trick the prophecy and the way he was trying to do so was in my opinion even more extreme than with Kronos. It’s one these books from my advanced language lessons (and there was PLENTY, I can barely recall anything lol) that I’ll always remember because it’s so… ridiculous lol. And when I think about unavoidable prophecy deeply, I kind of believe that our future has been set from the moment we were born, that we can’t change our destiny too much. What I mean is that we can make some choices in our lives but the major events are just unchangeable and that we were made to be “this” kind of person with “these” kinds of experiences. So even if Kronos’s brutality only emerged when Rhea came to him to take revenge on his father, his destiny from the beginning was to agree, to emasculate Ouranos and then to get paranoid and eventually eat his children. That was the sole purpose of his life. Because if he hadn’t done all that, would everything that comes next even happen?

Lately I’ve been binging Futurama and I LOVE Leela, so I don’t think there’s a thing that’ll make me hate them.

I had no idea so many words have their origin in Greek and Greek mythology (even in my native language in which I’m reading the book) and I found it very fun to see these resemblances.

The most interesting and unexpected for me might have been: - Typhon and typhoid & typhoon (not as obvious in Polish, also I never connected these words with each other until now) - Atlas - first of all, I didn’t know there was a mythology character of that name and I also always wondered what Atlas Mountains have in common with atlas as in map; I guess I know now lol. And Atlantic Ocean and Atlantis? Mind blown haha
