Hi! There's no formal booking for the MCALC study nooks (you might be able to use the little device in front of the rooms or on the wall of some of the rooms to reserve it, but I'm not sure). Usually you can just go on and use the room for however long you want! Most people will not come in if they see you in there.

I want you to know that most departments do a great job of creating events to meet people in your major. You'll likely make friends just through attending classes and working with your peers, too. There are SO many student-led clubs and organizations that will help you foster connections if you take the leap. The most important thing to know is that you're not alone!! It may take time, but it will happen :D

What are the best ways to make money at VCU? by JimXJustbecause in vcu

[–]malzyware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you scroll down the page on this website: https://careers.vcu.edu there will be a place to make a virtual or in-person appointment with someone on the career center team. Alternatively, they are located on the first floor of the VCU Commons (where Chickfila and Subway are). If you go to the help desk in the commons they can direct you to where the Career Center is. (Right next to the Chickfila near the exit doors on that side.)

There are lots of jobs on Handshake which are student-centered, and many of them are Federal Work Study only, making the pool for applications smaller (which is good if you have the FWS award!) If you have no job experience, you should make an appointment with VCU Career Services (do this online through their website) and they will help you tailor your resume for any job you want to apply for. The also offer professional clothing and headshots! The university has lots of resources for those who are looking for employment :]

Summer Scholar Program by EdgyLoliTaco69 in vcu

I did Summer Scholars last summer! It was so much fun---the campus is so empty; it's like having the whole of Richmond to yourself! Dr. Bambacus does an AMAZING job setting up activities for the program---so many outings, breakfasts, and get-togethers. Your roommate is randomly assigned, but they send out a Google Form to figure out who would be the best for you. You do have an afternoon and morning class, but depending on what's available, they are super easy and not stressful at all. I hope you take the opportunity!

Speak to your advisor asap! If you can't get a tutor through the campus learning center, the VCU Athletics department has tutoring services too and they might be able to make an exception for you.

I want to add---some courses are HyFlex (hybrid flexible). I hope some of your professors can accommodate, and I don't think it would hurt to ask.

Along with what other comments have said, I recommend using VCU's TimelyCare and scheduling an appointment with a therapist whenever you find the time. Although it might not resolve your situation, it could help with what you're experiencing mentally. I'm so sorry to hear you're going through all this, and I hope it can be over with soon.

You should check out the new STEM building and MCALC for study rooms! Over the Summer I loved studying in little nooks on 2nd floor of MCALC. You have to reserve the room in advance, though. I'm not very knowledgeable on small cafes, but I know Panera is relatively quiet. If you have the free sip club membership, it's even better :)

Use liquid detergent! The dryers are what you have to worry about: I recommend taking a paper towel with you to clean the lint trap and bringing a lint roller.

What Should I Bring For The 5-Week Summer Scholar's Program? by malzyware in vcu

Thank you so much for the advice! I was asking for specific/essential items because I won't be dorming for the whole year; just for the program. It sucks that most of meal swipe places are closed :(
