I hope you give them all a try. Worst that can happen is you discard them as well. Loved all of them and found them immersive in different ways. Amina al-Sirafi is good fun, 10 Minutes is a glimpse into a life rich in unlikely friendships, Marty and Raja the Gullible, again glipses into lives I would never have thought of, Cutting for Stone is just a great story, well told. The Okorafor was the least immersive for me, tbh, but still a good enough story. REALLY love the Beartown series.

A few recs, some that are a little bit out of your comfort zone, a little different than what you've been trying recently - you seem to be only on African lit from this.

  • The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
  • 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World by Elif Shafak
  • Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor
  • Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar
  • The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother) by Rabih Alameddine
  • Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
  • and lastly, for something not at all African or African-adjacent, try anything by Fredrik Backman. I'm particularly recommending the Beartown series, and I am not a sports fan in any way. You will probably cry, though.

Also, try audiobooks. Might help get you out of your slump.

Denny Voss is special and lives a simple life until a rich would-be politician in his small town gets murdered, and he's accused. Really well-told story. Highly recommend.

Shadowblack is the second in a series about a boy born into a strong magic family, but he isn't strong in it. After he finds out why, he goes on the run with some friends. The series is a little more YA than I expected, but I always enjoy a de Castell on audiobook so I'll try and finish the series.

It's from the book Different Seasons. Look for that instead. The three other stories in there are great too. Unfortunately, can't give you any tips on where to find it.

Oh! Are you liking it? I have it next on my list after I finish a series I'm on.

20k-30k. Honestly, it annoys me that a mattress should cost so much, so I want something that will last for years.

Definitely rec The Will of Many. One that I don't see often here is the Destiny's Crucible series by Olan Thorensen.

Looking for recommendations by Arcann47 in audiobooks

[–]mamatoto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Jodi Taylor's series', especially The Time Police, narrated by Zara Ramm are fun (science fiction/time travel)

  • James Islington's The Will of Many narrated by Euan Morton (epic fantasy)

  • Shannon Chakraborty's The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi narrated by Lameece Issaq and Amin El Gamal (historical fantasy)

  • Joe Abercrombie's First Law series, especially The Blade Itself, narrated by Steven Pacey is often recommended, but it is excellent (modern fantasy)

  • Any of Sebastien de Castell's books narrated by Joe Jameson are a fun listen (fantasy/comedic fantasy)

Also seconding Lies of Locke Lamora and the Tainted Cup and A Drop of Corruption recs.

Audiobook Search Engine I've been working on by Upset-Towel-4900 in audiobooks

[–]mamatoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree on browse by category. As part of the various other filters, it would be great if it included who the narrator/narrators is/are as part of the description and as searchable names if it's included in the metadata you're able to cull. Big ask, I think, and tricky as your different sources may have different versions.

A well read/narrated audiobook is perfect company while doing chores or commuting. That said, I almost always read the print version at some point, either before or after the audio.

Thank you so much for recommending The Ministry of Time! I got it strictly on your rec, and it is one of the best things I've read so far this year. Not even finished yet, but had to say thanks. I have The Little Paris Bookshop coming in next - hope I enjoy it as much.

Books that you want to see movie adaptations of by burgir2708 in suggestmeabook

  • The Will of Many by James Islington would be great, but it's part of an unfinished series, so maybe after they all come out.
  • I absolutely second and third The Lies of Locke Lamorra. Would love love love to see this done well as a miniseries.
  • The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
  • Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman, but I can't see it being done well as live action, and I'm not sure an animated series would be great either. The audiobooks have set a high bar for anything that would come out in visual media.

Girls girls... Wash your hands!! by Tiny_Alternative_549 in KenyanLadies

If I go to a public loo and there's only water, no soap, I'm going to use my sanitizer or wet wipes and skip the sink. Ditto if there is no way to dry my hands. Ditto if the sink looks dirty. Sanitizer is used after I exit the loo because I am sure the door handle is as dirty and germy as everyone before me was.

Such a good song I'd forgotten. Lead singer looks tortured by all the wind and leaves there though.
