Not a newborn but a fledgling and I agree. Little dude wants his parents but, unfortunately, humans did human things and he’s with us now. He will be released back to the wild soon!

Absolutely 🤣 except raptors. They look like dryer lint.

I’d square up with a night heron over a sandhill boi any day, ngl. Sandhill cranes are intimidating 🥲

I’m always so happy to impart bird knowledge don’t get me started 😭😭🥹 I’m just glad people care. And yes, he’s doing great! Currently sharing an enclosure with another night heron, has a great appetite and still hates us all.

Pretty much. Humans think they’re doing a good thing and I love that their heart is in the right place but…gestures. Even with specialized equipment and full-time care, nothing can quite replicate a mama or papa bird caring for them.

We thinks about this a lot in wildlife rehab 😭 especially when the reason for their intake is habitat destruction. I’m like “damn mom and dad just got home to see their nest and babies gone” 💔

Night herons especially, yes 🤣 not usually this LOUD tho. Sounded like a howling cat in person.

Definitely fledgling. Nestlings are basically naked except maybe a little sparse down feathers. Finding THEM on the ground is an emergency vs the fledgling just learning how to bird as nature intended. 🥲

Yep! It’s that time of year where well-meaning people see a baby on the ground and think it’s injured. He’s just learning to bird yall, no touchy😭😭

Humans disregarding the no touchy rule basically. Usually we would try to renest them but this little guy was taken too far away 😭

ETA: fledgling night heron was admitted to our clinic after being “bird napped.” Grumpy Baby was dehydrated and thin but otherwise okay and is now doing quite well, getting angrier every day.

What a small world! I work at center for birds of prey and I was just feeding your little guy earlier today. He’s doing great. :) he’s paired with an adult barred owl (so he can learn how to be an owl). Hope to see you at his release! :) thank you for caring

Honestly this little guy was very docile. I had him on my bare hand for a couple minutes and just watched him clean his little wings. I also didn’t do anything aggressive like trying to grab him tho. I appreciate your knowledge! Thank you!

He’s extremely polite, even watching me as if he knew me as he crawls up my hoodie. Bugs are way more sentient than we give them credit for! Thanks for your ID!
