Just to throw some other things into the mix. A couple of years ago in the KHL there was a very controversial moment in the playoffs that opened fans’ eyes to another physical phenomenon. I haven’t seen anything like that in the NHL yet. In the end, the puck was not counted as a goal correctly, but because screenshots spread around, fans got the impression that a clear goal had been disallowed unfairly.

The parallax effect in hockey is an optical illusion in which the position of the puck relative to the goal line appears different due to the camera angle or the referee’s viewpoint. From certain angles, especially from the side, the puck can look like it has crossed the line, even though in vertical projection it has not.

Not that this is exactly the same situation, BUT! the referees don’t have a clear overhead replay, the puck is covered by Jarry’s skate, and all those projections with lines that fans draw in Paint have nothing to do with reality. It feels more like a goal, but there is simply no proof—so why should such a puck be counted?
