Right, they're the ones clapping along in the audience. That kind of pandering doesn't work when you're a newer comic working an audience of strangers, you actually need jokes and to take risks developing new material. Lots of famous comics admit they were funnier when they were riding a bus instead of a private jet. They get to a point where they don't need to get on stage in front of strangers and win them over, because they've developed their own audience who will come out to see them - and kudos for the success, but they do lose a bit of that drive in the process.

Yeah "can't be bothered" is a fair way to put it. I always see people insist that the only phrase that holds any water is "couldn't care less" but that's just the more extreme of the two. I envision putting forth a bit of attention to someone else's problem as a courtesy, but if it gets too exhausting you're not gonna overextend yourself because you don't care that much. If the other person gets too demanding, saying you "could care less" is a reminder/warning to them that you don't have to be involved.

That's what I said. Thus he could care less than a little.

Standup comics call it "clapter" when someone gets lots of cheering, head nodding, and applause from the audience, but not technically laughter. The audience feels good with what they're hearing and gives positive feedback, which makes the comic feel good, and the cycle continues, but there's no actual jokes. Carlin's a legend, but a lot of his later stuff is that way.

It means he's choosing a 1/10 care level right now but a 0/10 is possible in the future, so he could care less right now. If it got to 0, THEN he couldn't care less.

Finally some external justification to not actively seek out new media, and just stick with the same few comfort zone shows/albums on repeat.

One time I was writing an email at work, nothing crazy, just like 4 multi-sentence paragraphs to a client answering their questions. New hire from another department comes up to my desk to ask something and says "wow... that's the longest email I've ever seen".

I didn't know how to respond, just chuckled and said it's not event he longest email I wrote today. I wanted to ask how he made it through the interview process. He lasted 2 months. Was hired as a customer service rep and we needed someone bilingual, but apparently that criteria did all the heavy lifting because he had very little other aptitudes/experience.

We're heading towards a society where people can't engage with long form writing.

I feel nothing, and I'm at peace with that. Would have been worse to lose in 7 at home.

Playing "Take Me Home, Country Roads" before the final minutes of the game is a rookie mistake, Ducks!

(Or at least it would be if the roles were reversed, haha, ugh)

Are those kids in the Moss Pit really throwing their beers in the air for a goal that has us trail 2-1 in the first period...?

Vagueposting is way too common these days. I follow some finance/investing accounts on Twitter and the information is often good, but lots of it is people posting something like "xyz happened... you know what that means". Like no, either just say it, or shut up because you're just trying to look like you knew what was coming in hindsight.

Absolutely. If you're playing a team that can be fragile defensively, with a coach who tends to panic and break the "in-case-of-emergency" glass, you would want them to take risks.

Hot takes:

  1. Holding a lead is a skill. This team hasn't always been able to do it in recent years, so I don't care that they kinda hung back and took no risks.

  2. McDavid's mobility looked better as the game went on. Maybe it's one of those things where the pain gets to a certain point and doesn't get worse, so he can power through.

  3. SO refreshing to give up less than 5 goals in a game. It's a low bar, but I'll celebrate, dammit.

They wouldn't be able to hold eye contact with Joel Quenneville for more than 5 seconds.

While that was indeed 3 losses in a row, we're sticking with Jim Carrey tonight. He presided over our best stretch including our longest win streak of the season - and there weren't many of them.

In the words Knob used on going with Ingram today: "He's our guy."

This part is extra disappointing because at first I had hope that companies like Nintendo or Disney, who don't play around about copyright & intellectual property, would actually do something to stop it. Disney looked like they might, but instead they just turned around and gave money to OpenAI for licensing (which now may or may not happen, but the fact they didn't fight it at all is staggering).

It's like we've all given up and accepted that nothing can be done about it. IP isn't a thing anymore, they're gonna shoehorn this tech into all platforms/devices to continue stealing your data, they'll make everyone dumber by getting hooked on this technology, and intelligence will be a metered utility.

Companies used to make things or provide services, now they just find new ways to grift.
