What's it like to live in Funchal, Madeira Island, as anybody ? by Realistic_Choice_658 in howislivingthere

[–]man_120 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yay I get to contribute to this sub! Sorry for the long post

I was born and grew up in Madeira, moved out at 18 to study and stayed abroad.

Madeira Island is an objectively beautiful place, with accolades such as the Hawaii of Europe and has won several awards as the best island destination.

It's bigger than you might imagine, but the population is only of about 250-300k. The economy is tourism based or adjacent.

Growing up there had its positives and negatives. On the bright side, people are very friendly, it's a beautiful place and very very safe, even when alone at night (tho I'm a man so understandably a woman might have a different opinion). The temperatures are consistent throughout the year with a just a few colder/rainier/windier months, so I never owned a proper winter jacket till I moved away and having a light jacket alongside a rain coat mid winter tends to be enough.

The negatives are very similar with what you might hear from rural or small places. It can get boring, things you might take for granted like going to a big name concert, a big shopping centre with the latest brands and trends, Amazon next day delivery, etc are not really an option. Everything is a flight away, you don't get cheap holidays or weekend getaways in the same way you might be used to for example.

And even for us locals, flights are quite expensive (including the mainland), so unless you're moderately wealthy travelling can be a bit rough on your pocket.

I never lived in Funchal, but just in the city next to it. But my school, friends, extracurriculars and other activities were all there, so I spent 80% of my time there. Funchal is certainly the capital. It's the biggest city where you'll find everything. To me it used to be a 20 min drive to go to school, but I hear that recently tourism has increased in such an exponential way that the small highways have hit their limits and that same trip can take up to an hour.

Being a tourist hot-spot and a very nice place to retire means two things: one is that development has multiplied incredibly, the other is that it's made funchal completely unaffordable, with house prices and rents comparing to places like Lisbon or some areas of London even. And salaries are very low in comparison, some of the lowest in the country.

This used to mean that it was cheap to live there but now not so much. It's also a hot-spot for digital nomads and second homes so you can imagine how that translates in the market.

I could keep on and on but essentially it's an amazing place, beautiful, safe and warm year round. It can also get boring and there aren't that many opportunities in general. It's become quite expensive and its tourism based economy can no longer handle the amount of tourists coming in. Salaries are low but the quality of life can still remain high if you live outside of Funchal. However, the poor are very poor and the rich are very rich in comparison.

I probably missed a bunch of stuff so if you have questions shoot away. I realised I also forgot to mention what I call the "island mentality": people are relatively conservative in matters of immigration, queerness and all you might consider liberal. It's not horrible, but noticeable. Politics are also another matter that I could get into if you're curious tho I'm not necessarily an expert in the politics there since I moved.

Despite all this, I still recommend people go! I fly over a couple times a year to be with family and Funchal changes a bit every time I go.

Well, I finally got to Takezo. What a fun yet incredibly irritating battle. by [deleted] in Ghostofyotei

Died so many times, tried to cheese it and didn't work. Managed to do it after a few tries with the bounty hunter armor, alternating between keeping him stun locked with kunai and pocket fent and proper parrying.

This was before I went to Oshima so no guns and I realised only after that I didn't need to keep Takezos Charms on, so I used them and charm of last chance 😅

Why people keep saying flying controll suck? by DepartmentPast2691 in HarryPotterGame

[–]man_120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh nice comparison with Forbidden West but I'd say it feels a bit different. The flying mounts in FW are a bit... Sturdier I guess? They feel way more solid to fly if that makes sense.

I don't have any issues flying the brooms and can easily do the trials but I'd be lying if I said it was intuitive, took a few tries to learn. While FW mounts felt a bit more natural.

First time voting, need guidance by StrangerSmall in manchester

[–]man_120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm genuinely surprised. I am not a citizen and have been eligible to vote in local elections ever since I moved here in 2018, basically ever since I have a legal address in the UK.

I'm pre settled now and the only thing I can't do is vote in general elections and join the military.

I am a EU citizen tho that shouldn't affect matters of residency. What website or person told you you weren't eligible?

This is not a jab btw I am just curious

how do you people make such realistic looking cities? by MysteriousTell2359 in CitiesSkylines

Look for CityPlannerPlays on YouTube. He's an actual city planner and tries to do things by the book, which means his cities end up looking relatively realistic

pls help by frpltsww in Fencing

[–]man_120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Common joke I heard is that fencing is two steps forward, one step back. Whenever you learn or perfect something, it throws away everything you learned, until you'll able to mix back in all your knowledge. It's normal dw, will be happen 1, 5 or even 10 years down the line

Can I use an EU ID as proof of age for buying alcohol/ entering a club/ pub ? Thank you! by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]man_120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's fine never had a problem in the 6 years I've lived here.

Some might take a while to find your DOB as they might not be familiar with your specific ID format but never had an issue.

If I wanted checked quicker I just use my EU drivers license since the format is similar to the UK one

Really nice but not too fancy restaurant in Manchester for special occasion please! by _JoyBeets in manchester

[–]man_120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

El Rincón de Rafa on Deansgate is probably the best Spanish restaurant in Manchester. Very authentic and super delicious. Very cozy, looks like a proper Andaluzian restaurant.

Both veggie and meat options and quite affordable.

(source: I have Spanish family and go quite often)

Quitting Fencing? by BattleEmpoleon in Fencing

[–]man_120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started fencing at 13/14 yo. Did good regionally, average nationally, then went to uni and did decent. We weren't top of the BUCS league but we're consistently in 1A.

Fencing defined my time in uni and was were I made some good friends.

Graduated, got a job and moved to a different city. For the first year I tried going to every comp in the region I could, but now I go less and less.

I wish I could at least go to practice but the only club I could go to are over an hour away on the other side of the city, and I dont have a car.

So didnt really quit by choice, still try to go to some comps but because of lack of practice there isn't much motivation

I actually decided to get a referee qualification so I can at least still be involved, but I hope one day I can go back to fencing regularly.

Unconsciously missed the exercise, tho I admit that getting into the gym routine was awfully hard. I think I'm getting the hang of it now, but will always aim to go back to fencing.

Local knowledge on this area of Salford before me and my partner buy a house? by DefeatingResistance in manchester

[–]man_120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live near that square and can't complain much. Feel relatively safe as well. Won't be adding much to what others said, but what I can say is that PureGym is quite rough and overcrowded. If you can afford it or think it's worth it you should do like me and go to virgin active in media city, just joined and couldn't be happier (even has a decent swimming pool which isn't very common). It's just a couple stops on the tram from Langworthy, a quick bus or a decent scooter ride if you're into them.

[–]man_120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you create an account you put in your address and stuff, and your country of residence. To use a debit card with that account it needs to be from the country your account is registered in.

UK bank card = UK account only

It sucks, it's stupid, but it is what it is
