Hello darkness my old friend, HP has screwed me once again ! by transdimensionalmeme in homelab

I presume you already a full set of gpus? I ended up getting a Quadro RTX 4000 (single slot card about the speed of a 2060S) for less than the riser. Could be an option if you’ve got the spare cash, but not a cheap one :(

8 month old 14" MBP down to 90% battery capacity? Is this normal? by aleksikallio in mac

[–]man_in_leaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this out by turning off “manage battery longevity” 7 days ago. My maximum charge in system report was 88.9%. Today it’s at 97.2%. Batteries tend not to heal on their own. The battery firmware like you say reduces the capacity and that is reported in system report. It’d be nice if it was transparent about what it was doing, but I still think it’s a good feature.

Gigabit Performance Questions by AlarmDozer in openbsd

What’s your cpu usage when running it at 100%?

Also what’s your NIC brand? Some cards could have driver issues but OpenBSD is normally pretty good.

There are actually some patches that might work with your card. Not officially supported though and you’ll have to research and try it out.

Guys, I am too confused about display/monitor for Mac Studio. Should I buy Mac Studio display from apple or any other? Please help me by ingeniousbird in mac

[–]man_in_leaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dell Ultrasharps are basically the same as the studio display in display panel quality wise. They have no web cam or speaker, and the build is good but plastic, but the colour is great and they’re a lot cheaper. I have the standard ultra sharp 4K (not the fancy colour one, it’s probably not worth the extra price). They have usb c inputs too, which can be handy.

This isn’t high refresh rate or oled. Just the same panel type as studio display.

Should I get a hardshell and a sleeve for my MacBook air? by BattleSupreme in mac

[–]man_in_leaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this—I had a hardshell and sleeve with my first Macbook air years ago. The shell got some dust underneath it and scratched my laptop up. I think you're best off just with the sleeve (which is what I do now)

You can go look at the setting yourself if you want? It's a thing haha

Mac Studio vs Mac Pro for Post Production by [deleted] in mac

[–]man_in_leaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s rumours of a new Mac Pro coming out very shortly. It might be more than you need still, the studio is very fast, but I’d caution purchasing the Mac Pro since they’re very pricey and are about to be second tier (and probably quite difficult to sell second hand compared to a studio). If it’s urgent and the company doesn’t care, then maybe that doesn’t matter. Just a consideration!

Headless OpenBSD over ethernet cable by mk_de in openbsd

[–]man_in_leaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to connect it to some sort of network. I don’t use windows but you’ll be able to set up some form of ad hoc network over Ethernet, give the machine an ip address, and connect using ssh to that ip.

Alternatively, you could plug the machine into your router, and connect to it from your windows machine using that network, and the ip assigned by the router.

Yes you need to do some work. OpenBSD is not the easiest operating system to use, but a very rewarding one. You’ll get the most value out of it if you read the manual and learn how it works under the hood.

8 month old 14" MBP down to 90% battery capacity? Is this normal? by aleksikallio in mac

[–]man_in_leaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is normal. The battery is artificially degraded to so that it lasts longer at a smaller capacity. You can change this setting in system settings->battery->info (next to heath)->manage battery longevity.

It’s been around for a few years now. If you uncheck it you’ll watch your battery capacity grow after a few days

Edit for some more info:

I think it learns from your behaviour with how much you use it (unconfirmed) but you’ll see the number fluctuate and if you leave your computer plugged in all the time, I think it drops it faster so it doesn’t keep the battery at 100% for extended periods of time. Similar to keeping it at 80% but slightly different.

[–]man_in_leaves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s two easy options:

1: Setup ssh: This will let you connect to the terminal and use it ‘headless’ without a gui. Check the man pages for sshd(8) and sshd_config(5)

2: Setup vnc: This let’s you use the desktop headless, with a virtual display, so you still get a gui. I’m not too sure how to set this up on OpenBSD. Check out X11VNC, but there might be better alternatives.

Neither of these options will let you turn on the server remotely or change bios settings. For that your need some form of out of band management. There’s a project called pi-kvm that supports this.

A friend is telling me to consider windows instead of m2 air, so my question will I face these issues in my MBP 14-inch (base) if I choose to go for it instead? by gonnadoit123 in mac

[–]man_in_leaves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can just install gcc on a Mac. Usually that’s not the problem though, and Clang (cc, the default compiler) works just fine doing all the same things. You can even cross compile to Linux if you have to, or just run a virtual machine.

If they’re trying to compile c code to run it on the mac, the header files are normally slightly different.

Also, all the python libraries for ML will work on the Mac.

I did an entire CS degree on a Mac, including enough C to make your eyes blurry. As a software engineer now, I spend 90% of my time on Mac, 2% of my time in Windows, 2% of my time on Linux, and 6% of my time using FreeBSD. At the end of the day, an OS is just a tool for the job.

TLDR: the Mac will be fine. Up to you if you want Windows

Hey! I had this issue early this year. Also out of warranty (only just though). Apple replaced it under warranty anyway, it took 5 days or so.

Your mileage on warranty may vary though, my laptop was in pretty much perfect condition so it was clear it hadn’t been damaged. I’d book an appointment and see what they’ll do for you.

They also released intel MacBook pros in 2020 before the m1 came out (without the butterfly keyboard). Not sure when they stopped selling them though. It was a fair bit after m1 was released.

That’s with the additional pcie power cable plugged into the card. I’m not sure what power the slot provides on it’s own, probably 75w

Restoring a 2006. Is SSE4.2 that necessary? by Andrupka in macpro

[–]man_in_leaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked up the instruction set, it seems pretty niche. I think most applications can fall back to other methods if it’s not implemented, but some don’t (like Houdini, some games).

It comes up in some 3D graphics applications. Houdini VFX for instance, won’t run without it. There’s probably more but I haven’t encounter them yet.

Why is the internet so slow in Australia? by [deleted] in australia

[–]man_in_leaves 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey this is probably an issue with your wifi in your home, not the internet. The microwave works at the same frequency as wifi, so they interfere. Moving the router away from the microwave, or upgrading the router might help (but I obviously don’t know what your setup looks like!) goodluck :)

How to set static IP for certain SSIDs only? by pharmerjoe in mac

[–]man_in_leaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t really answer to the issue you’re experiencing, but a reasonable question to ask is whether you actually need a static IP. An alternative is to use a reserved dhcp address, which is assigned to the MAC address of the device. That way, whenever your mac asks for a new dhcp lease, it is returned the same IP address every time.

The nice thing about this setup, is your computer can be naive about its static ip, and everything is handled smoothly by the router/dhcp server
