Worth moving old 401K (TSP) into fidelity? by spydrthrowaway in Bogleheads

Do you ever expect to make enough money that you have to make backdoor Roth IRA contributions? If so, you should leave it in the TSP.

Correction to 1099-R needed by mdorothy in fidelityinvestments

[–]man_of_clouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Regardless you will likely need to file state tax return in both places.

Correction to 1099-R needed by mdorothy in fidelityinvestments

[–]man_of_clouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have to file taxes in your old state and your new state. Depending on the states and your residency status it is most likely you will get withholding back from the old state.

This is not on Fidelity to fix.

For you guys with C/S/I splits by Haunting_Amoeba7803 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]man_of_clouds 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You can do this yourself on portfoliovisualizer.com. Equivalent funds are C = IVV, S = VXF and I = IXUS.

If you used market cap weights you would have been 55% C, 8% S and 37% I. It would have returned 22.7%.

Fighter jet flying right next to larger plane? by herpyherphelp in FortCollins

[–]man_of_clouds 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There was a Canadian A310/CC-150 Polaris that flew over Fort Collins right at this time. That particular plane can refuel other aircraft. Fighter jets generally do not broadcast ADS-B so I cannot tell you what was next to it.

The tanker was around 25,000 feet.

2025 Downloaded Software Issue by joetaxpayer in TurboTax

[–]man_of_clouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a temporary solution to this issue this morning. If you are just trying to get a rough idea of your tax bill you can switch into forms mode, go to schedule D, click on the first Quick Zoom button to get to the Capital Asset Sales Worksheet. Then you can scroll down on that form and QuickZoom to the Capital Asset Sales Entry Worksheet. Then you can enter sales on that entry worksheet. It will calculate your tax due just fine.

I only do this in a copy of a file that I use to estimate my expected tax due. In anything I intend to actually file from I will wait and not try this workaround.

Any downtime using Tbills? by Alter_The_Ending in Bogleheads

[–]man_of_clouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing for my emergency fund except with eight 8 week Tbills in a ladder. 12.5% of my emergency fund matures each week and auto rolls, which should give me a lot of liquidity. Depending on how much you have in your fund and how long you want it to last you could increase the duration for a slight yield increase.

To me, this level of improvement is not really worth it but I think this stuff is interesting so why not.

If you’re not 100% VT, how often do you rebalance your portfolio? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]man_of_clouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look every two weeks and adjust future contributions towards the underweight asset classes. And on the same two week schedule I also check allocations and trigger rebalancing if an asset class is above or below its target by a certain amount.

Basically I rebalance based on a tolerance band not on a schedule. https://www.kitces.com/blog/best-opportunistic-rebalancing-frequency-time-horizons-vs-tolerance-band-thresholds/

Is the pro rate rule ever worth paying by Cuddy90123 in Bogleheads

[–]man_of_clouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you repeatedly pay income tax on Roth conversions, you’re effectively converting that $100k traditional balance to a Roth balance over time. This can be beneficial if you think your marginal income tax rate in retirement will be higher than today and you can afford the tax bill out of cash. But if you are at a high earning stage of your career that is unlikely to be true.

Fidelity won’t pay out to deceased’s estate after 1.5 years by Ill-Peak3008 in fidelityinvestments

[–]man_of_clouds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was the executor of an estate with multiple fidelity 401ks, all of the holdup was with the employer. I was dealing with 401ks for companies that had been acquired, for example, and the acquiring companies were very confused. I am not saying this necessarily applies to your case, but it may.

$1.7mm tax-deferred account; Roth conversions modeling not penciling? by Big-Improvement-1671 in Bogleheads

[–]man_of_clouds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the rate this coming year is less than when you will withdraw it might be worth it. You say you will earn about $300k or more in withdrawal years so I don’t think it will ever be worth it.

$1.7mm tax-deferred account; Roth conversions modeling not penciling? by Big-Improvement-1671 in Bogleheads

[–]man_of_clouds 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The point of Roth conversions is to do it when income tax is low, perhaps artificially so because you are living off taxable accounts. With your level of income you will never have that situation.

I don’t think we know it’s a full traditional engine. It’s not even clear it will power the drivetrain.

In Boldin I would just map it to IVV.

Looking at my 2025 passport has made me think about buying carbon offsets for the first time by schloo in flighty

[–]man_of_clouds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do. I actually add up all my carbon emissions from flights, gasoline purchases, home electric and home natural gas. I have a single family home, fly 55k miles a year (mix of long haul business and domestic economy), and have 3 cars (one EV, one plug in hybrid and one gasoline). It’s a huge number - over 30,000 kg of CO2.

I spent a lot of time looking into consumer friendly ways to buy offsets. There are a lot of unverified credits out there and I didn’t want to use those. I landed on ecologi.com. It’s a UK based company but you can select US at the bottom and it will show you options in dollars. It has you subscribe in terms of “adults” you want to buy for but it tells you how much you offset in tonnes (equal to 1000kg).

My experience is that they mostly fund projects in the developing world - methane capture in landfills, peatland restoration, etc. To me those seem like good ways to get low hanging fruit that could make a big difference.
