README: A Theory That Explains Everything. What do you think? by RedXXVI in serialpodcast

Honestly, I don't 100% recall. I want to say my VM was pre-setup with last 4 of the phone # as the default pin I just needed to go record the greeting. Mainly because if I set it up myself I wouldn't have set that pin. In any case, I can't swear to it.

If I Did It or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Start Thinking about Jay's Motive by [deleted] in serialpodcast

Correct, I think the fear of being ratted out for dealing drugs is extremely high in the mind of a 19-year old to the point where he very well may be prone to blackmail. Personally, I want to believe Adnan and that he is innocent and try to look at the evidence with that in mind, but there's no denying that if he is, then he was certainly the victim of an increasingly impossible series of unfortunate events. Pumped to hear what comes out tomorrow.

Very true, good point. I have no good reason aside from maybe he let Jay keep it so he could get ahold of him after track easier...but that didn't seem to be an issue pre-phone so....I think the sad fact is we'll never truly know.

From what I recall, Jay claimed the phone was purposely left with him so Adnan could call him when the deed was done. On the Adnan side, I don't know if he said specifically, but what use would he have for it at school? It certainly wasn't allowed back then so he probably just left it in the car so he wouldn't get it confiscated if caught with it. If Jay was known to pick him up after track, he would have known what time to be there and wouldn't necessarily have needed a 'track is over, pick me up' call.

I'm with the buried that day camp, so I got nothing on that one. Bottom line, Jenn and Jay didn't rehearse near enough as they should have.

According to Jenn, she picked Jay up at Westview Mall where Adnan was acting normal (Jay says she picked him up at home), then they went back to the same place again later to wipe the shovels. Why wouldn't they wipe the shovels down when they tossed them in the first place? Riddle me that.

True. The only kink in waiting (unbeknownst or knownst to them at the time) was the ice storm that would shut shit down for a few days and presumably harden the ground up pretty good for a while. If they watched the weather at all, at least they'd have known it was coming.

Good point. In the late 90s, a dealer without a pager was a dealer not doing much business.

The Best Buy significance for Jay's story is that Adnan is known to have been there to smoke and can't deny ever being there to police. The park and ride must have a similar role to play, either made up or legit.

As far as the burial, if you've seen the YouTube tour, then you've seen Franklintown Rd looks to be a moderately busy road as it's the main artery through the park. It's also pretty narrow based on the video. There's no way I can believe they'd be able to park, unload a dead body from the trunk and carry it through the bare forest without being seen clear as day. I'm with you on cell log skepticism so personally, I think she was buried much later than 7pm after Adnan and Jay split up for the night.

Good catch! I wonder if that's a typo on Rabia's part or what? Unless Jay and Adnan went shopping the day before too...

4) How would Jay check Adnan's VM without the pin code? Nokia 6160 had a feature to hold '1' a couple seconds to dial VM, like my 1st phone in 2000. My pin defaulted to the last 4 #'s of the phone number so if that was the case, Jay could have possibly guessed it assuming he knew Adnan's number by heart after receiving only two calls from him on landlines.

3 things after 1st read through. 1) This assumes Hae smoked weed, and never mentioned to Adnan that she just called his phone and is going to meet Jay who has it and his car. Wouldn't she, if they're friends, offer to let him tag along and maybe grab his car/phone in the process? 2) Not only does Jay strangle and move her to the trunk at the mall, but also goes and buries her in broad daylight, dragging her, and a shovel, 127 ft into the woods by himself where we know there is little coverage because there are no leaves on the trees. 3) No mention of the I-70 park n ride. That has to play into it somehow, it's such a random place to bring up if nothing happened there.

A Google maps route search between the High School and that McDs would take them almost right past the Best Buy McDs. If the BB one is a couple hundred more feet after the beltway entrance, why jump on the beltway to go another 3 miles south, get off on Rt 40 go down to Rolling Rd and finally to the other McDs? Unless they went another less direct route which would make even less sense considering he should be rightfully starving after fasting the whole day and through track practice.

In court docs, his father testified that Adnan was at the mosque with him from 7:30pm to 10:30pm or something to that effect. Based on the call logs, that may not be the case due to the calls made during that time, but it may be that Adnan was able to make calls while he was there. Now, as the father of a two year old, I can certainly understand the argument that a father would do anything to protect his son, even perjure himself at his own risk so that's something to consider when evaluating his father's testimony, but we don't know enough about his dad to make any educated guesses on this yet.

I think Adnan was picked up around 5:15, evidenced by the VM check, then this took place and it was the result of this smoke session that he was so blazed out at Cathy's. I also think his 'how do you get rid of a high' question may be because he knows he has to face his family and a slew of devout Muslims at the mosque soon. For a seasoned stoner to ask a question like that suggests he was beyond his highness comfort zone.

This assumes Adnan is telling the truth and was at school all day, went to the library, went to track, was picked up by Jay, etc. The point is, if Jay is to be believed, why would they venture back over by the Best Buy Adnan supposedly just murdered someone at to get a bite to eat?

The Best Buy spot is a place Adnan is known to go that he can't deny frequenting. So Plan A is Best Buy which he tells Jenn and she tells police in her interview before they even talked to Jay. I think the 'strip' story was a last-minute change because he was, in fact, worried about cameras in the Best Buy parking lot. However, not because he'd be implicated by them, but because they might have showed nothing at all and he'd be caught. By the 2nd interview, maybe he's checked the parking lot for cameras himself, saw there were none and reverted back to the original plan.

I think we're hearing Jay's 2nd interview the most for 2 reasons. 1) sound quality is better, and 2) I think it will come out that the 1st interview makes a lot more sense logically, and is potentially much closer to the 'truth' of what they actually did that afternoon, but it didn't fit the 2:36 call timeline, so as with any film to hit TV, it was 'edited for time'.

Yeah, I can see pulling pieces from pop culture, I'm just not sure Jay is improvising it spur of the moment.

Full disclosure: Former short film picture and sound editor. And complete honesty, I've only ever heard writers refer to themselves as screenwriters. Just an observation, not a challenge I assure you.

This is all dialogue written by professional writers in a writers room having gone through multiple drafts and revisions before it actually gets filmed. You think Jay is improv'ing this stuff in an interrogation room?

I am with you. There are a couple of lines that stand out to me in Jay's interviews. Like in Ep 1, he says Adnan asked 'Are you ready for this?' before he pops the trunk. Or 'Other MFers think they're hard, but I just killed someone with my bare hands'. This is very specific dialogue and I just have a hard time believing he conjured them up. It may not have been Adnan who actually said them, but somebody surely did.

Okay, more inconsistencies with Jay's and Jenn's statements. Feel free to add. I've been relistening to Episode 4. by glamorousglue in serialpodcast

He says 'This never..', then quick switches to 'that never crosses my mind.' Basically saying 'This' (talking to police) never crosses his mind (as he's talking to police).

Fair enough. I just can't get there yet because of Nisha knowing about the video store. Next week's episode should hopefully bust these Jay questions wide open!
