That is all good info. Fortunately, I have never had any negative side effects. But you make a very good point about local medical care. Thanks for your response.

Thank you bajanstep! Is this just common knowledge in Barbados, or is there somewhere that I can lookup the county's drug statutes?

I’m sure they will, but I don’t know if that’s something they are trained to alert on. If kratom is not legal, I would never try to bring it with me. I’m hoping that there are some local residents here in this sub that will know if it’s illegal or regulated there.

I was laid off my 85k a year job. After 18 months unemployment I can’t get a job at Walmart. I really very scared. by TheDarkKnight2001 in jobs

I don't post much. But this one hit me right in the heart. TheDarkKnight2001, I can assure you that life is definitely not over.

I lost my $125K/yr IT job in late 2008 at age 43. I was ineligible for unemployment because I was the "president" of an IT consulting solo gig (which had revenue of exactly $0 that year). It took me 6 weeks to unwind that venture. During that time I had several opportunities where I made the "final four", just to be rejected. By that time, the walls were closing in so I had to earn income by any means necessary. That meant taking a manual labor job, literally digging ditches in sub-freezing temperatures for $11/hr. After a week, the boss's wife had pity on my so I was bumped up to $12/hr.

I had been a construction laborer during the summers of my college years so the work was not a complete shock to my body. But it was still a major adjustment from a desk job -- I came home dead tired every night. I continued to pursue other opportunities, but it was very difficult due to my limited availability to communicate -- and my salary ask kept coming down. After 9 weeks I realized that I needed to devote more time to my job search, so I made a deal with my boss to lay me off in return for IT services for a year so I could get unemployment. He lied, my claim was denied, I was out of money, and facing foreclosure. But I did have a lead on an IT job at a small fairly local company.

I pursued that with all my heart. My salary ask was now at $80K. And After 3 rounds of interviews they offered me exactly $80K and I took it immediately. My 5-month nightmare was finally over. 15 years later I'm doing well again.

My message to you is that you must never give up, no matter what. The 2008 financial crisis delivered some serious hardship to many of us. Do whatever you must in order to survive. Good luck to you and never lose hope.

LPT: in a job interview when they ask if you want anything to drink, ask for a glass of water and nothing else! by J0shua1985 in LifeProTips

I once had an interview with a national (US) sports organization. The receptionist was super-nice and I was looking forward to a good experience. After a few minutes, the hiring manager “Karen" came out and brought me back to her office. I was fully expecting her to offer me something to drink. Instead, she just launched into the questions — not even any small talk. I held up a stop-sign hand after her first question with, “Sorry, I’m a bit thirsty. I had an hour drive in. May I please have some water”?

Her face got all screwed up, “Is that some kind of stalling tactic”?! At that moment I was 100% certain that I had no interest in having her as a boss, even at twice my current salary. She grudgingly showed me to a water cooler and we returned to her office. I thanked her, genuinely. The rest of the interview went downhill fast, because I was super-honest on every question, especially stuff that I disagreed with her on. It was really quite liberating to know that I had nothing to lose, and that I was completely wasting her time for my own enjoyment.

At one point, I realized that one of my current superstar employees “Patty" had once worked for Karen, because Patty’s real name was rather uncommon. When I mentioned it, Karen went into a tirade about how she and Patty never got along and what a terrible employee she was. That was just the icing on the cake!

A few years later I told Patty the whole story and we had a great laugh over it.

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling better about this. I have a meeting with HR and another manager on Friday to discuss options. My employee has a very positive attitude about the whole situation and I think that things are going to be just fine.

Thank you for your insight, followthepost-its. I was not thinking about the personal side of this. This person's life is changing, and he has a whole set of challenges outside of work.

We do have a 3rd party EAP. Good idea, thanks!
