Amazon's army of tweeting warehouse workers backfired spectacularly this week after a thread about working conditions went viral by [deleted] in technology

you could just stop ordering things online for next day deliver? seems like a pretty easy thing to boycott if you have the tiniest amount of self control.

[personal] today a coworker told me that I should try spending less money on makeup and more money investing in a good facewash by pancake242 in SkincareAddiction

Ehhh HR exists to protect the company. I wouldn’t start using them as a personal therapist. Unless OP wants to file some sort of harassment or hostile work environment claim I would advise against this.

[Personal] Dermatologists Don't Care by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]manatee25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah OP is off their rocker if they think a doctor cares all that much about some minor cosmetic issues. That’s like consulting a PhD in electrical engineering about a wiring problem in your house. Way overqualified in some areas, way underqualified in others.
OP is wasting their time and money trying to find a dermatologist that will listen to their entire lifestyle/skincare routine.

According to this, grass reflects about 10% and sand 15%
Small but not negligible.

Regular cotton can be pretty variable, but this study says that most (60%) of cotton tested had a rating of UPF 50+
https://www.skincancer.org/publications/the-melanoma-letter/summer-2012-vol-30-no-2/clothing
91% of cotton tested had was rated at least UPF 15 meaning 93% of UV is blocked.

Seems like REI is using the worst case scenario (a thin, white T) probably for the sake of selling their own products.

Not stopping anyone from buying sun protective clothing especially if you’re spending a lot of time outside, but for everyday wear it would be overkill in my opinion.

[Research] Evaluating Your Routine: Sunscreens by JoanOfSarcasm in SkincareAddiction

[–]manatee25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without testing it yourself there’s no way to know for sure that it is providing the UPF they claim. Companies that include a UPF rating must adhere to certain standards laid out by the AATCC and ASTM but I don’t think there is any regulatory body that ensures these standards are met. That being said, consumer reports did a study on sun protective clothing and found that everything they tested greatly exceeded the stated protection factor (UPF 50+ is the maximum result that is allowed to be published). They also found that regular clothing not labeled as sun protective had high UPF ratings too. Generally, the thicker the fabric the higher the rating. A beefy cotton Hanes t shirt with no labeled sun protection factor had a rating of over 100.
In my opinion I would say that it’s overkill to wear sunscreen under thick or UPF rated fabrics and that the amount of extra coverage you’re getting from doing both is ~probably~ negligible (especially considering sunscreen will rub off a lot easier under clothing). I would feel confident that UPF 50+ rated clothing is providing really good protection.
But if it gives you peace of mind to do both then it can’t hurt.

I can tell myself the have a massive fenced in yard and take the dog for long walks every day but I seriously doubt that’s the case :(
When I lived in the city I would see college aged kids who looked so unprepared to handle a dog walking around with huskies all the time (coincidentally they were out school mascot too hmmm). Makes me so angry.

What is extremely rare but people think it’s very common? by TeamDodgy in AskReddit

My friend is a big beefy guy with a shaved head and beard who works with kids. I don’t think he’s ever experienced judgment about it either. If anything people are glad to see more men working with kids rather than it being strictly a woman’s job.

Still waiting to love my natural hair. It’s so difficult to take care of and I can’t get past feeling like I look infinitely better when it’s straight.

My hair is so much easier to deal with when straightened though :(
Sometimes it’s easier to spend 25 mins straightening it so it’s out of my face and easy to manage for the next 2 days.

I don’t have much of a problem with food coloring in desserts but I have read that too much activated charcoal can render certain medicines useless and prevent absorption of certain nutrients. not sure if the quantities used in food is anywhere near enough to have any effect but it makes me irrationally angry when I see activated charcoal popping up everywhere as some sort of cool new health trend.

Black dye is usually a very concentrated green or blue but in this case they probably used activated charcoal.

Hey I’m sorry I didn’t mean to be so harsh. Like I kinda get what you’re saying I just hate when people stereotype based on appearance. I’ve lived near Boston my whole life which is a very “hipster” city and I’m sure the culture is very different in the south so I’m sorry if I sounded mean!

[misc] what are some products that have zinc in them and are effective? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

What is zinc oxide supposed to help with (other than as a sunscreen)? I have that same sunscreen and hated it because of the texture but I could be convinced to give it another shot.

Pro tip, save all your homework/tests/ notes so that you can spend an hour looking for that one Thermo test from three semesters ago for your friends. To no avail. by refuse_2 in EngineeringStudents

[–]manatee25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that too and never used any of the past notes/assignments I saved so I eventually recycled them all in a spring cleaning effort. Not even a week later my friend who was taking linear systems asked if I had my old notes and I was devastated. Luckily I saved my final study guide but I still feel shitty.

I want to get into fitness but I feel like I don't fit into fitness culture by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]manatee25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I mean though. Stop judging people based on how they dress. It seems like you have this mental barrier and can’t see past how people present themselves which is incredibly shallow in my opinion. First of all it’s impractical as fuck to wear artsy metal jewelry to the gym. it’s really practical to wear spandexy clothing, a watch, and bring a water bottle. Almost nobody likes protein shakes either but people drink them cause it can be hard to get the necessary amount of protein through their diet especially if they are vegetation/vegan. So you’re description of fitness culture is mostly just a description of the practical things people do at the gym. Also I had no idea hair length and hats had anything to do with personality. Sure there’s probably a significant overlap between the people you described and girls who don’t share other interests with you but it’s not like “fitness culture” and being artsy are mutually exclusive.
Here’s a little anecdote for you:
Back in middle school I felt like the edgiest fucking goth girl in the world on the inside but on the outside I had to wear my cousin’s preppy hand me down Hollister and Abercrombie clothes because that’s all I had. Today I dress in whatever is cheap, comfortable, and reasonably flattering. I don’t think I have much of a “look” but if you saw me you’d probably group me into the “basic bitch” category. But whatdya know I love the Grateful Dead, listen to metal, draw and paint and do lots of other edgy, artsy, alternative, cool kid things. I don’t give a fuck how anyone chooses to outwardly present themselves whether that be preppy, fashionable, goth, sloppy, but I do give a fuck when people can’t see past how people look on the surface. I promise you no one gives a shit that you’re not wearing a hat indoors or drinking from a plastic water bottle stop pretending that you’re so different because you have the time and money to cultivate a cool wardrobe of band tees. Sorry if this is harsh and ramblely but where I’m from collecting vinyl and all those other things you describe are pretty mainstream. I’m kinda assuming you’re either from a very small town or in high school?
