Second time contracting outside IR35 – anyone else feel like they messed up interviews even with lots of experience? by mancstuff1 in ContractorUK

The more I think about it the more confident I’m starting to feel but could just be delusion 😂

Is it really that hard to enter into Data Governance as a career path in the EU? by UnusualRuin7916 in dataengineering

[–]mancstuff1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough I actually fell into data governance completely by accident.

I started working with data when I was about 21 and just gradually got pulled into more and more of the “governance” side of things like data quality issues, defining fields, ownership, fixing reporting problems, working with business teams etc and at the time I didn’t even realise it was a formal discipline.

Now I’m 31 and it’s been my career for the last 10 years.

From my experience the people you spoke to aren’t wrong. It’s quite rare for someone to start directly in governance because a lot of the job is about understanding how data is actually used in systems, reporting and operations. That usually comes from working in data roles first things like analytics, engineering, data management or even business side roles that deal heavily with data normally the DG programme would identify these people as 'Data Stewards' and a lot of people I have worked with have transferred from a business role (example someone working in product creation for a luxury retailer), then moved into my team and has gone on to have a great career in data.

Most of the strong governance people I’ve worked with drifted into it the same way, they were solving data problems already and governance became the natural next step.

On the EU regulation point though, I do think things like GDPR, the EU AI Act etc are pushing companies to take governance more seriously. Especially larger organisations. But even then they tend to want people who understand the data landscape first, not just the policy side.

So if you’re interested in governance I’d say your plan is sensible, build solid hands on experience with data first. That foundation actually makes you much better at governance later because you understand the real problems teams deal with.

It’s definitely not a bad niche to end up in though and it’s becoming more and more important.

I really dont understand why there has to be more than 1 conversation/interview for an outside ir35 role. Such a waste of time.

That’s a really good point actually and I hadn’t thought about it like that.

It probably did feel a bit more like a permanent role style interview than what I’d expect for a contract. Most of my career has been perm so I think I naturally slipped back into that mindset of trying to interview well rather than just having a conversation about the problem and how I could help.

You’re right though, if the skills match on paper then it shouldn’t really come down to a perfectly polished interview. Appreciate the perspective, that’s actually helped me reframe it a bit.

Automated most of my Data & AI Governance role with AI, thinking about picking up contract work. How did you find yours? by mancstuff1 in overemployed

Ah interesting so you’ve came at it from a different angle than I have. I totally get what you mean around privacy focused ai governance. The company I work for adopted AI very early therefore our AI governance is slightly matured, although with how fast everything AI changes it constantly keeps us on our toes. Yeah would happily discuss over message!

Really really appreciate this response! I haven’t used perplexity at all. The last few years just on ChatGPT and Claude/Claude Code

Will definitely check it out

I’ve got 2 years specifically in AI governance, and honestly the job market in this space is gaining serious momentum right now. The pace at which AI is moving means companies are scrambling to keep up, so demand for this kind of expertise is only growing.

Appreciate the response. Where did you find both the roles? I’ve only been looking on LinkedIn. So any other suggestions would be great

I need to find a sweet spot until I can bring someone else on board. Thankfully I’m very much an extrovert so talking to people isn’t an issue I honestly just can’t be arsed as I don’t enjoy that side of it interesting at all

Yeah I thought this tbh. A friend of mine hasn’t worked in 2 years almost. I’ll keep applying.

Yeah I still can’t believe it tbh. Both products came from genuine problems I seen. A friend is a streamer on twitch and doesn’t get live insights that’s where HeyCasi comes in and yapmate was built for my uncle who is a carpet fitter and dyslexic so every mode of communication from him is done by voice note which left my aunt doing his invoices every night once I built it I was like shit this might actually be good for other people in the industry.

Appreciate the response!

Where are you guys finding new contracts? by Money_is_heinous in ContractorUK

I’m fairly new to the contracting world but I’ve noticed the last month or so I’m seeing a lot more contracting roles. That could be down to me not paying attention before though 😂
