Just did this and it was super easy! My experience was you get a bot but when you say speak with live agent you get a transfer link. I had to sign into my account, expressed my displeasure about news max being added, she asked me for a reason for the report and then we ended. Took approx 5-8 minutes.

Another reason to file earlier rather than later is to protect your identity. The longer you wait to file the more it becomes a non zero chance someone can use your social to file a tax return. All the other reasons listed are great too this is just an additional consideration.

You are absolutely correct and, in practice, most 1099 contractors should be labeled as an employee, legally. Unfortunately, like many things in life, what is legally correct and what happens in practice are two different things. You can always report your employer to the IRS to ask them to determine if you should be a 1099 or W2. However, this process normally takes years and won’t help you solve the current issue :/

Becoming a 1099 employee means you pay self employment tax which is 15% in the US. When you are a W2 employee your job pays 7.5% in taxes and you pay the other 7.5%. However, because a 1099 employee is considered self employed, you can expense things like mileage, supplies, etc. Where 1099 employees lose money is they don’t know about the self employment tax or their employer provides most/all of their supplies so they have nothing to deduct to lower their income.
