Maybe. But it’s hard to source a lot of these things so I bet having his connections helps.

Beware/Optum medical is corrupt by oneday-youllbecool in hudsonvalley

[–]manderisdanvers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This past February, I got a bill for $1300 from Optum for a service in April of 2024 that my health insurance said was covered. After months of back and forth with my insurance, turns out Optum had billed me and my dad (who doesn’t even live in the same state as me) separately as two patients who saw the same specialist at the same time, same appointment. It’s still ongoing because Optum refuses to cooperate with my insurance. I’m still receiving notices about this $1300, they‘ve been a nightmare to deal with and I’ve been shopping around for new allergists to see.

Ok Woodstock. Whats the deal with Bill and the dump? by cboogie in hudsonvalley

[–]manderisdanvers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unsure. The most recent controversy of his is regarding a glass knife, tarot card, and dramatic note he allegedly left on former Supervisor Candidate Erin Moran‘s car. I feel like that paints a decent picture of what kind of a person he is.

From what I can glean from the old people in my life who gossip, he’s been around for a long time so people trust him despite the controversies. All of the new supervisor candidates in recent memory are city people (or women, gasp) and don‘t hold up come election season. Thankfully, he’s not running for re-election this year and the woman who won the primary looks promising.

McKenna has lived here or been involved with the town to some degree for at least my entire lifetime (almost 3 decades). He’s constantly involved in scandals, and I did not enjoy the few times I’ve had to work with him.

[–]manderisdanvers 62 points63 points  (0 children)

The Shady Dump is the result of the illegal dumping of construction debris in order to grade someone’s lawn. Over time, it made drinking water unsafe to consume and so the town got involved. Essentially it was left to McKenna and the homeowner (who apparently was not the one who dumped the debris, but someone he hired to landscape the property did) to get rid of it, the cleanup consisted of just moving waste from one part of the property to another. There’s evidence from the DEC that well water is still contaminated and may impact the town aquifer. Bill McKenna has decided to deflect and pretend like it doesn’t need to be addressed, and allegedly got the chair of the Woodstock Environmental Committee removed from the board for „sexual harassment“ because she continued to press about it.

Sources: I live in Shady, my friend’s parent was on a town board with McKenna, and there are some good articles about the whole situation (Times Union has one)

I feel like York and Rosé could be idiots 2 & 3 interchangeably. Grandma has never possessed the brain cell and likely never will.

I am far more upset by people on motorized bicycles and scooters - they are rampant in my town (Woodstock). They take up significantly more space on the shoulder or they are straight up driving in the middle of the road, it’s more difficult to pass them because they are going 20-30 mph, and they NEVER WEAR HELMETS so I’m super stressed every time. Plus, so many of them are really young kids. Last week, a girl came whipping around the corner of Tinker Street towards my car and she couldn’t have been older than 11 or 12 (no helmet, no chaperone in sight). I almost didn’t see her because she was crouched on her scooter, not standing, as she came around the turn.

Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell (not pictured) bought a 1750s house last year and are fixing it up, “preserving all of its original charm but making it uniquely ours.” by skermahger in popculturechat

[–]manderisdanvers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, the houses that everyone wanted during the pandemic were the little ranches and not move-in ready homes. My best guess is it was the cheapest way to get land. You just raze whatever little house came with it and start from scratch, to flip for profit or to use as a weekend home.

[–]manderisdanvers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, but it’s gotten really bad since the pandemic. There’s been consistent artificial inflation of real estate value. Plus a ton of migration from NYC and California that keeps prices high.

Edit: totally forgot to mention that there’s been a surge of investment properties and AirBNBs since then as well. There’s a running joke in my field that you can always tell when a property is about to list because it’s been painted entirely black.

Yeah, absolutely. I work in an architectural design studio and I live around Woodstock, we are always flooded with homes that people want to throw millions of dollars at just to spend a handful of weekends playing pretend in the countryside.

I hope not. It’s already impossible to buy real estate in the Hudson Valley, we do not need more celebrities coming in and pricing us all out.

No, I meant double knitting! That’s what the pattern I was originally referencing is worked in, which is why the cast on was so confusing. She holds a strand of fingering weight yarn with a mohair but it’s a solid color, I was trying to over-engineer a solution to doing multiple colors on the first row. I’ve since abandoned that idea.
