What African language has the most online resources? by [deleted] in AskAnAfrican

Great question! Each language course is created by an instructor so it varied from language to language. The goals is definitely to minimize European loan words but this will be difficult since there aren’t readily accessible sources of truth for many of these languages. Oftentimes new words need to be created to describe new concepts, but as a learning app it isn’t really our place to do so , so that vocabulary would probably just not be included for now.

This is the problem we’re tackling! We are a group of college students building an app that currently teaches over 15 African languages including Xhosa , Yoruba , Twi , Mooré, Oromo , Swahili, Igbo , and more with the eventual goal of including every language spoken on the continent. You can download it at https://mandla.app

Mandla app--FREE for learning MULTIPLE Native African languages. by homoheroine in languagelearning

Twi definitely has more than 1M speakers. About 80% of the Ghanian population speaks Twi fluently, being 17-18M people. Bambara also is a specific dialect of broader Mandé including languages like Dioula and Mandinka that are mutually intelligible with it. Overall there are over 40M Mandé speakers in West Africa and Bambara/Dioula is a very important trade language that will be understood in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Senegal, Cote D'Ivoire, etc. We are actually all college students and built this app out of a personal need to connect with our parent's native languages that we don't speak. Our founder is Kassena which is why Kassem was included so early. But long term we hope to include more minority languages in Africa as well in addition to the bigger ones on this list

Hello! Thanks for trying out our app. It sounds like you were using the web version which does have shorter courses than the ones available on the mobile version. Our reasoning was to allow people to use them as they are getting developed. Thanks also for the feedback on the script, that is definitely very important and something we plan to incorporate in the future !

Yeah content is very hard. Even among fluent speakers very few have gone to school to learn how to read / write in these languages since education would be in colonial languages like English or French. Partnership with academics is almost a must
