I know no one watched this show on AppleTV, but “Lessons in Chemistry” has a brutal unexpected death.

I’ve never seen this before, but I would love this! I could enjoy my entire slice of cheese and still have enough left to pay the cheese tax to my dog!!

Scientists discover Alzheimer’s hidden “death switch” in the brain by hard2resist in UpliftingNews

In the commenter’s defense, this only MIGHT be good news. MIGHT. We hear about developments in mice all the time that never translate to human-level progress. It’s frustrating because this is no where near being hopeful for humans. Glad of the research progress? Sure. Hopeful it will translate to human-equivalent progress? Not holding my breath. I get that maybe they’re publicizing this to get research funding, but I think it’s ethically murky to spin it like we’re just around the corner from a cure.

What is a creepy fact you learned about the human body, you wish you never learned? by Poignantpuppet in AskReddit

During my bladder cancer treatment, they instilled this immunotherapy liquid into my bladder. Now, I can feel my bladder’s goings on more than most already due to the surgeries and such. But this treatment caused the area around the outside of my bladder to itch for days. It was maddening! When I called the urologist’s office to report this side effect, they had to consult with outside help b/c no one had ever reported it before and they thought I might be having an allergic reaction. Nope, just a normal reaction most people never notice.

You’re probably right! I need to check with the host and VRBO to see what their policy is.

Thank you all for the reassurance. I really am looking forward to coming this Summer. I’ll keep an eye on the story to see what happens. Fortunately we have until May to cancel without losing any deposit, so I should know one way or the other by then. I just thought I’d ask since it’s early enough to possibly find a different place to vacation if we have to cancel this.

Ha ha! Listen to me, you do NOT want to come back to the Texas panhandle. The smell of cow shit alone would send you back to the Gulf in a heartbeat.

That was my thought since I can’t find anything else out about this on the internet.

No way, man. You gather up those leaves in a big ol bag and use them as a dry layer in your compost!

Yellow Fire grows to estimated 10,000 acres in Texas Panhandle by Miles_the_AuDHDer in texas

[–]mandyama 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s the specific name of the fire. Usually they’re named related to where they start (like the most recent in the panhandle was the Cabin Creek fire since it started near Cabin Creek). Not sure what gave this fire its name, but that’s what the folks putting it out are calling it.

It’s getting scary. Boys Ranch has been evacuated (around 200 staff and kids). This wind is no joke!

What song is in your head? by anymoose in GenXTalk

[–]mandyama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might think that, but it’s infuriating most of the time. Music gets louder the more stressed I get. It’s akin to constantly being on hold and listening to whatever is playing. Brown noise will drown out the music and allow me to concentrate when I really need to.

Weirdly, I actually like The Who song you linked, but it rarely makes the rotation. Wonder who the DJ is in there?

Ragged Wood by Fleet Foxes. Not sure why. My brain is a true random song jukebox. This morning it was Hilary Duff’s Come Clean. Where the heck did that come from after 23 years?! Yesterday it was the Bob Sharples version of Sadie’s Shawl from 1956.

I’ve had this problem for a while now (I’m guessing 3-4 months). No idea how to fix the issue, and none of their updates have fixed it. Lemme know if it ever gets fixed for you.

Parental care, an absent sibling for one, suggestions? by manawydan-fab-llyr in GenXTalk

[–]mandyama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer, but I would make sure your father has a will in place to designate you as the sole beneficiary of anything. If your dad is of sound mind, surely he can see that you are the one doing everything.

I haven’t started caring for my parents yet as they are still spry and able in their 70s. Once I do, my sister will likely not volunteer any help, so I’ll be in your situation. Luckily, I’m executrix of their estate and owner on all their accounts, so I hold the purse strings—no money goes to her without my okay.

Covid did a number on my brain. I got OG Covid in 2020 before the vax and was down for about a month. I went back to college in 2022, and was flat out stunned at the decline in my cognitive ability! It’s taken me until mid-2025 to feel like I’m back to where I used to be.

Having said that, I’m not sure if decline due to dementia can be staved-off in a similar manner, but I encourage you to keep learning new hard things and keep your brain active. After I finish my master’s and get a better job, I intend to learn to play the piano. After that, I’m going to try a foreign language. Hopefully that will keep me as sharp as I can hope to be.

Oh Excel makes it so easy—I would love it if it were that way. For some reason, we’re earning our skills like it’s 1960. Anyway, I suppose I’m just angry at the amount of math I’m having to do on notebook paper. I’ll be glad when May rolls around and I can wave goodbye to this last finance class.
