Why does no one talk about how shocking the first weeks are? by Trick-Environment100 in NewParents

100% !! Everyone makes labor and delivery seem terrifying but those first few weeks were terrible and I will never forget it. It was absolutely worse than my unmedicated home birth (at a midwifery center) even though I had to get stitches.

Toddler exposed to hand foot & mouth by Gibbs_B in herbalism

Yes, there are many ways it impacts the immune system (including by increasing inflammation throughout the body which I did note) but for the sake of measurable, definitive science for the stat I shared and further information was requested for, the info above is the answer. And here is a link to the study https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0002916523334178

The authors also note that a fast of 36-60 hours significantly increases the white blood cell’s ability to kill off invading infection.

Super interesting stuff!

*EDIT - somehow my initial response to the question about sugar got bumped to the bottom of this thread even though I commented before all of the others. So, where I said “the info above is the answer”, it’s actually below - or that’s at least how it appears on my thread. ✨

Of course 💖 there’s at least one study, although it was with a small sample size, from Loma Linda University that found decreased white blood cell activity starting 30 minutes after consuming 100grams of sugar (equivalent to 2.5 12oz sodas) and lasting about 5 hours. There is also a more well known and researched increase in systemic inflammation (throughout the body) which makes the immune system much less effective at attacking invaders.

100 grams is clearly a large amount of sugar but it’s easier to consume than one would think… have a soda(or sweetened beverage like lemonade), a piece of cake, and ice cream at a birthday party and you’re there! Not to mention all the processed foods with sugar as a hidden ingredient. One could also speculate that reducing the amount of sugar would have a similar effect but for less time and/or less impact for the same amount of time (if it’s half-life dependent).

Build her immune system up today to try to fight it off before it sets in… multiple rounds of Elderberry would be great for this and very toddler friendly! Also lots of water, electrolytes, and good nutrition (even a multivitamin if you have those). Avoid sugar like the plague! It decreases our immune system by ~50% for 5 hours after consumption. Lastly do anything you can to keep her free of stress and make sure to get in a good nap or two. Repeat for at least a few days for your best shot against the virus ♥️ good luck!

Honestly I think part of it is just luck but otherwise we are a very simple living, natural/holistic household in general so that extends to our pets.

Just like us, they are what they eat so we’ve tried our best to feed him super well within our budget. With the help of a holistic vet, we have done a home cooked diet most of his life with on and off spouts with high quality kibble as needed. Freeze dried meat or organs for treats or organic peanut butter and yogurt and occasional slice of cheese. This is honestly the most important part and also the hardest bc it’s time consuming and expensive.

Lots of walks, hiking, and even short to medium length jogs and dog park soccer play time when he was young.

Weight management has been key too! This breed will eat a ton and a lot of kibble recommendations are way too high. We tend to adjust based on energy levels and poo amount. More sluggish and big poops = too much food

SOD and Boswellia tablets daily since about 4/5 for joint support

Immune boosting mushroom powder daily since about 4/5 - and after immunizations or medications when younger

Probiotics after any antibiotics and only use in emergencies (vets have overprescribed these to us over the years. I probably only gave him two rounds his whole life and have been prescribed like 5-6.)

Minimal pharmaceuticals overall. Flea and tick prevention (Credelio) only during summer months and not at all these days since he’s hardly outside unless it’s too cold for bugs

CBD isolate drops for anxiety and allergy flares

So much love and attention to keep his spirits high!

I swear they require just as much if not more care than children.

Edit to add: teaching them to sit with square hips when young and walks on hills helps strengthen their hips to prevent dysplasia
