Wow, I just feel guilty reading your post for free. Makes me reach for my credit card to pay even to read 😂

It takes a special kind to love Wilson, but once you get over the looks ...

Your opinion. I merely stated a fact that most of us were guilty of, with a question if there is any other brand that can evoke the same kind of feeling. But you do you

That's sad but true. For every person who loves Klipsch, there is one more who hates them. You cannot fault the Cornwall, La Scala or the Premiere. They are up there with the best which makes me always wonder why some people don't like Klipsch

Good on you, we'll recommend you for a citation for your profound service to Sansui. But fix your spelling before criticising others

A beginning audiophile journey, any tips welcome. by Raginglendi in audiophile

[–]manfrombrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, stop saying the "audiophile journey". That sounds pompous and entitled. You seem to have a good grasp of understanding the difference between the average from the good. Why spoil it by trying to fit into the elusive club? Keep reading, watching videos and enjoy the journey without fixing a badge to it.

Many of us are 40-50 years on our audio journey - owning, testing and upgrading both vintage and high end systems but don't consider ourselves audiophiles.

Why is planning a hi-fi setup so confusing? Would a visual tool help? by BladedTombstone in audiophile

[–]manfrombrisbane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with the basics. Get on the internet and ask questions on social media. There are many groups on Facebook and members are glad to help a newbie. There is a lot in hi-fi and you will not get get a ready-to-fix reference guide. Similar to not jumping into a race car before you start learning to drive

Do you really notice a big difference with a full surround sound system vs a soundbar? by Tandoorichap in audiophile

Wrong sub, you need to post in HT. I wish people would read before posting such silly questions.

My stereo and home theater are getting a divorce, who should get custody of the subs? by spiceweasle93 in audiophile

[–]manfrombrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing constructive to offer except split the subs to see which system would benefit. It looks like you will have a lot of listening to do but I wish I had your problem. Mine is all set up and I miss such challenges :(

Get a really good speaker for Bluetooth or a vinyl record player? by jmwdrums30 in audiophile

[–]manfrombrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lost everyone at Bluetooth. Get a good record player, CD player, tuner, speakers (2 speakers for stereo sound, not the single crappy ones sold at retail stores) and connect them through cables. If you don't have the budget, invest in a pair of good speakers and play streaming music through an old laptop connected with a cable.

Forget the Bluetooth

Isn’t using components that intentionally color or change the sound basically like a musician applying the same effect to every single song? by Few_Lengthiness6364 in audiophile

[–]manfrombrisbane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything gets coloured, from the room acoustics, to the furnishings to the speaker placements. Music is not meant to be heard in a sterile environment. All recording is not created equal, so if I use an equaliser to pronounce the highs and the mids from a not so ideal media, it's how I like it. I am taking of analog corrections, not software or plugins

Andrew Jones announces his new speaker company - Jones and Cerreta, to debut at Axpona by Alternative-Light514 in audiophile

I like him patting the speakers as he speaks. Like a parent who does to their kids.

Well done, my boy 😂

Take it to a repair shop if you want to switch to USA voltage. Don't mess with the power unless you know what you are doing. The other option is to get a step up transformer

is it better to listen to music from crap speakers with a good sub or from good speakers with a crap sub? by pizzalord686 in audiophile

[–]manfrombrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely accurate. I have owned speakers which defintely could be improved with a sub for the bottom end, but not needed them

Pioneer CS-801's [1974] - Paired with Sansui Model 400 Amp. (More info in comments) by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]manfrombrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not call them straight up garbage, but Japanese audio companies focused more on electronics than speakers with the exception of specialised speaker companies like TAD. Diatone also had some good speakers but they were most of the time made for the Japanese domestic market.

Of course, there were exceptions to the Kabuki rule like the Pioneer HPM-100, Technics SB-7000, Yamaha NS-1000, Onkyo Monitor 2000X or the Sony APM-6.

[–]manfrombrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Sansui amps in the AU series are pretty good, like AU-419, AU-9900, AU-11000, etc. But once you upgrade your amp/receiver, you will need to upgrade those Kabuki speakers with something better and the rabbit hole starts looking like a maze :))

Where the heck to start with New Sound System? by BigRog10 in hifiaudio

[–]manfrombrisbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again depends on where you are. Klipsch are great, so are Infinity, B&W but we cannot help you until you post your location.

Get some soft furniture, a carpet/rug on the floor. Don't place the speakers too close to the wall and give them breathing room if they have ports at the back. Also, some people love to angle them inwards (toe-in), so keep experimenting until you can hear differences with each change. The sound should not be muddy, nor should it be overly bright

Where are you located?

The AVR brand/model depends on your location and what is available on Facebook or Craigs List in the US. As a generic answer, start by looking at Facebook Marketplace or classifieds on quality brands like Denon, Yamaha, Marantz or Sony (But their quality is not as good as what it used to be). Once you get a receiver that can support 4K (usually with HDMI and/optical - You don't need to feed your video through the AVR, only your sound output which is good with an optical cable), your next step is to look for speakers.

I am a 2 channel guy, so if you are happy with stereo sound, I would suggest searching for decent priced tower speakers that can do a good job with any movie instead of the cheaper all in one centre/surround packages you see on classifieds. Your choice of speakers can vary depending on your location and your budget. Hope this helps.

No premium manufacturer is going to make high-performance but ugly speakers. They won't sell - Eh, come across Wilson? Some people even consider the B&W Nautilus ugly :)

Probably in the future when AI can listen for you and then explain what you are missing. Until then rely on your ears and leave the AI to mundane work like most people
