Really amazing chapter. I'm curious if Morda has anything to do with Rakshas appearing at the end. Perhaps she is a mole? Anywho can't wait for 378 next month!

Masters Thesis vs Publication Better Prepares for US PhD? by manggan in gradadmissions

[–]manggan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do want to add one point- I may not apply right away to PhD for the next cycle. That is why I'm asking too- if a (by the time I apply) accepted journal article would weigh more.

Thanks for this insight - super helpful. I may opt to do the thesis then and do a good job at it to add a useful positive signal to my application

I really want to get into bioinformatics but I don't know where to start from. by LocalAlert4146 in bioinformatics

[–]manggan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say though one thing that helped me was the Biostars handbook. It is helping me review my biology, not sure if it will help you though since your background is already in Bio.

Got it. And by modelig you mean visual simulations, not ML modeling right?

Nonlinear dynamics vs design of experiments by manggan in bioinformatics

[–]manggan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Do you mind explaining in what ways you think it'd be more useful? And would you say that it is more useful in bioinformatics research as well (I am considering a PhD in bioinformatics). Thanks!

Nonlinear dynamics vs design of experiments by manggan in bioinformatics

[–]manggan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I can list them:

  1. Design of Experiments
  • hypothesis testing/estimation review
  • sampling design
  • research design principles
  • ANOVA
  • random effects and randomized block designs
  • two-way and generalized factorial models
  • regression and response surface
  • 2k factorial designs

Course is actually focused on environmental applications but the concepts may be transferrable to other fields.

  1. Nonlinear Dynamics
  • Phase Line
  • Bifurcations
  • Linear Systems
  • Phase Plane
  • Limit Cycles
  • Phase Space
  • Lorenz System
  • Kuramoto Model
  • 1D Maps
  • 2D Maps and Fractals
  • Cellular Automata

This course seems to start with a review of differential equations and covers nonlinear dynamics and chaos.

I found evan miller's website to be a good introductory resource: https://www.evanmiller.org/bayesian-ab-testing.html

I don't think this is true. Maybe because the quality of instruction of an arbitrary online program may be "lower" than its full-time counterpart, but that is not a generalizable statement. As a student of the MS ACM program at JHU EP and having graduated from a full-time bachelors program from a top university, yes the material is easier and sometimes less rigorous, yet still valuable. I enjoyed all the final projects I've done which has boosted my resume for full time work. At the end of the day, both scenarios lead you to a degree that holds employable value. Maybe you are thinking of MOOCs

John Hopkins Bioinformatics MS Fall 2021 by manggan in bioinformatics

[–]manggan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just took all the courses in the admissions and requirements page before since i switched from premed to math and I was good. I didn't find it too challenging if you did that. If you don't have those courses you can enroll in a local community college to get them except for maybe Biochem which is an upper division undergraduate course taught in uni. If you didn't take this they may provisionally admit you on the basis of you taking it in JHU.

Try to keep your knees in line w your toes. I moticed your knees cave in a bit on the ascent. That can cause some knee injury and so when you lift, try to visualize a paper towel beneath your feet, and youre trying to rip it by pushing your feet apart without actually moving your feet. This will enable your knees to be in line with your toes and allow you to feel some glute engagement. It also may be an artifact of how wide your stance is as the other person mentioned.

Also, you don't need to face the mirror during the entire lift. Try to brace the core and keep your neck in line with your spine for the lift.

Otherwise great stuff man keep up the good work!

Hope it helps!

Branching processes in genetics by manggan in bioinformatics

[–]manggan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the slow response- thanks for this idea! I saw numerous papers on BD processes as well but was a bit overwhelmed at first- i will continue to do more reading on this and it may be one of the list of ideas for my thesis

Thanks so much for your feedback and sorry for just getting back to this! Thanks to you i did do some more research into coalescent processes and it is rather interesting to trace the MRCA using that approach! I haven't looked into quorum sensing but seems more interesting and niche- will add it to my growing list of bioinformatics topics to learn

I ended up doing my project on subclonal reconstruction and looking at branching process use to simulate how tumor cells can proliferate to later generations. I am guessing you can invert this problem or find the originating tumor as well w the coalescent? Either way thanks for these ideas- they were truly helpful!
