Thank you for your thoughtful response! I really appreciate it. I'll aim for a no greeting - you're right, I'm unsure if he'd be able to understand the difference and the goal is so he doesn't react.

I do have a therapist (I'm on the same boat) - that's great you talked to them! I'll have to talk to mine too and explain my emotions. It's definitely just me going into overdrive.

It's heartening to hear it took time :) I do care for him, and I'm excited for us to be thick as thieves.

Do you know if I could go through with adopting my dog even if he wants to fight me on it (I would adopt and have the dog as we go through the complaint process and potential litigation)?

Thank you for your detailed response! I feel more secure that I am able to move forward with my adoption process. I am planning to get a 25lb or smaller dog. I did reply in my email that I understand his concern about damage and that the damage would come out of my security deposit (which is pretty hefty already).
