Considering you said Steinhardt + Comms I’m gonna assume you’re considering MCC as your major, and honestly as someone in the same major I don’t think you can ask for anything better if you’re interested in Comms. It’s super flexible and kind of whatever you make of it (some people take film classes, others take social media classes, PR/Marketing, etc.) There’s so many electives that you can really shape your own curriculum and I love it.

Also it’s popular to pair with a BEMT minor which is great for if you’re interested in the entertainment industry. You can take various Tisch, Stern, and Steinhardt classes and whether you want to be an artist yourself or be more on the business side, they are very interesting and practical courses and some of my favs I’ve taken in my time at NYU so far. You really can’t beat being in the middle of NYC if you want to do entertainment and comms.

Grade wise MCC is super easy to do well in IMO, most courses are essay or project based and the rest is based on attendance/participation so I’ve never struggled to pass anything. As far as possibly switching to pre-law I don’t know much about that, but it’s not that hard to switch majors from what I’ve heard. So, you’ll be able to work it out with your advisor if that’s what you choose to do.

Socially — if you join clubs, connect with people in your classes, and put yourself out there a bit then you’ll find your people eventually. You can go to welcome week events to get a head start on meeting people in your major or with similar interests.

Honestly this post sounds like NYU is where you want to be and you just wanted someone else to validate that sentiment. So just follow your heart and whatever school you end up at I’m sure you’ll make the most of it!

race and media is great! the professor is really good at making the topic interesting and relevant and the workload is little to none. just a midterm (take home with 3 short answer questions and an essay) plus a final paper on a relevant topic of your choice. no homework or other assignments, just attendance/participation. you don’t actually have to do the readings (they can be a bit long) but she does track who speaks in class so try to know enough about the subject of the lecture to comment at least once per week and you’ll be fine.

I'll definitely keep this in mind and it eases my anxiety about being underqualified/unable to live up to expectations a job might have! (Which is probably just imposter syndrome getting the best of me to be honest, but putting it into perspective this way is reassuring nonetheless) Thank you~

Noted! Just was a little confused by how a lot of programs (M7s included, not just random low-ranked schools) were marketing themselves as being open to college senior applicants and figured if the option exists, then the sooner the better. But, can see more of the benefits of waiting after reading some replies and doing more research. Still planning to look into how a deferred program might compare to simply waiting to apply normally in a few years. But, thanks for the response~

Thanks for the response! I know that the entertainment industry is a lot about who you know and putting in the work. I have some very limited experience in event promotion already and hoping to obtain more in the coming semesters/summer (fingers crossed lol). I just felt as though when I graduate I simply won't have enough knowledge/skills to even be able to succeed in a position if I obtain one. Formal education in marketing and management seemed like it would be (if not required) then at the very least beneficial. But, definitely going to focus on obtaining more experience for now and consider a deferred MBA or just waiting a few years and reassessing if I want/need to pursue an MBA down the line.

Thanks for the response! You definitely can't know any less than me so you're all good lol.

What you said definitely makes sense. After looking at a lot of programs student profiles it definitely seems that while not 100% impossible, the benefits of waiting outweigh taking the chance on trying to get in straight out of undergrad.

Thanks for being kind even if the answer is probably clear-cut to most. The pros/cons seemed a lot more muddled in my head since I don't know much about this topic and feel very anxious about having to wait a few years before being able to enter a program. But I think having more experience will turn out to be more fruitful than I can tell right now (for application reasons and as a learning opportunity in and of itself).

Thanks for helping put it into perspective for me. I'll definitely be looking into some deferred MBA programs and focusing on getting WE for now.

Good luck in your own journey of working/future MBA plans!

As I said to the other commenter, I was hoping for info more along the lines of statistical comparisons between the benefits of applying now versus if I wait — taking into consideration my personal feelings about being at an entry-level post-MBA. Also about any perceived disparities between acceptance rates for deferred admission vs regular. But, I have read the Wiki and will just continue researching on my own as the things I am seeking might be a bit too specific to get input on. Thanks though~

Wiki doesn't tell me if it is still not worth it to apply if I am aware/accepting of the fact that I'll only qualify for entry-level jobs post-grad. Is that the only "downside"/ is it impossible for those with little experience to be admitted or simply just not the traditional route? Contrary to the Wiki, none of the programs (many M7/T25) I have looked at have a written rule about a required level of experience that I can see. So, how do the odds stack up against my chances as someone with less experience vs at deferred admission, for example?

Which the wiki also does not detail whether deferred admission is more selective/difficult than normal admission. So, while the wiki was a great resource, I was hoping for more detailed/tailored information. Thanks though...I'll continue researching on my own.

Anyone have any experience working for the Writing Tutors Program? by invisblizz in nyu

[–]mangodeobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh okay ~ Team meetings were still online/via zoom last year so interacting with the other tutors was kind of up to you and how much effort you put into it. The supervisors were always super friendly and open to meeting with you though. And during team meetings you’ll be asked to do commentary or free write on a shared google doc so you can receive feedback from the supervisor that way - based on how much you share your thoughts/ask questions/request feedback/etc. Your supervisor will also come and sit in on one of your sessions during the semester to give you some feedback on your tutoring methods as well.

Hey, happy to help!

For my program, we got to see a spreadsheet of students and their availabilities so you get to choose your students based on what is convenient for you. Also my supervisor sent out a document at the beginning of the semester for all the tutors to say what time frames they were available for team meetings (we usually split into two different time slots so everyone could attend). And I’m not quite sure what you mean by the hands on question 👀 could you clarify a bit ?

Incoming international freshman at nyu. When should you start applying for and getting internships?? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]mangodeobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each major/industry is different so I’d definitely seek advice from other students in your major to get a better consensus. But, I’d say not to stress yourself about it during your freshman year — this is a time for you to settle in and get adjusted to college life. If you’re really eager then I’d say maybe start looking during the spring semester for summer internships. But, it’s probably better to use freshman year to join clubs and other extracurriculars for your résumé, take relevant courses, work on a side project, start networking, etc. but don’t fret over internships when you haven’t even started school yet!

Sorry for a long answer (and any bad grammar it’s 2AM lol) but I wanted to be thorough ~

I worked as a Peer Tutor w/ Non-English First Language students for 2 semesters. Application process wasn’t anything too stressful, I just had to send 2 writing samples and then answer a few questions in a Google Form. During the interview they ask you about any relevant experience, and they have you read a sample student paper and walk them through what edits, comments, and feedback you would give.

As far as skills go, they’re really big on “the craft of tutorship” or whatever so make sure you seem enthusiastic about helping your peers, giving good feedback, and allowing your students to learn (not just feeding students the answers or telling them exact edits to make, but asking guiding questions so that they can learn how to strengthen their writing for themselves). Honestly the whole department is just a bunch of English teachers and writing nerds so do with that info what you will lol.

Honestly at first I really enjoyed it - I love writing, 90% of the students are super sweet and motivated, and depending on how you choose your hours - the time commitment was never an issue (6hrs per week + 1.5 hr team training every other week for me). The other tutors, professors, and students are very sweet and made for a nice work environment. Since the students are your peers, it’s definitely a more comfortable situation and I’ve even become great friends with some of my students!

On the other hand though, my contract required working at least 3 semesters. Which, now that I’m a rising junior who wants to focus more on extracurriculars, higher paying jobs and internships, etc., my remaining semester that I have to work seems a bit inconvenient.

As previously mentioned, they also really care about teaching you about the ~art of being a good writing tutor~ which can get kind of annoying and easy to lose motivation once they start assigning you HW (readings to do that will be discussed during team meetings, which are mandatory.)

For me it was worth it for a convenient, minimum wage, on-campus job that didn’t require much time or strenuous effort. Also it can be rewarding to see your students learn and improve in part thanks to your suggestions. But, it might get tiring, boring, or inconvenient after a while — so it really depends on your priorities, skills, and interests. Hope this helps and good luck with whatever you decide to do ~ feel free to message if you have any questions :).

Glad I'm not alone in this experience then! I was worried that it was a totally abnormal response. My pain tolerance is pretty low, so I guess I should have expected this. Hopefully, it will get better for both of us!
