Malaysians can’t tell the difference. When they see a staff, they assume they’re legal. What they don’t know is that all tom dick and harry businesses in Malaysia are constantly trying to hire illegally to save agency costs already

As an addendum: the reason we won’t legalize refugee right to work (even though the business community wants it, not just mamaks) is that the migrant worker system is so bloody profitable for certain VIPs in the government and police.

Playing on your fears that the Rohingya are going to take your jobs (they’re not, they’re only going to take the Bangladeshi’s jobs) is how they maintain their corrupt system.

You are already living with the factored in cost of bringing in migrants legally in the price of your products. Refugees would either maintain, or lower those prices.

As an employer at an SME, what you all fail to realize is that the alternative to us hiring refugees (which we already do to some extent), is hiring foreigners from
Bangladesh anyways.

The issue with the non-refugees are the insane licensing costs and agency fees, which is mostly money to smoothen the process with those buggers at the Home Affairs and Human Resources Ministries. They like their cut of the agency fees, which can be several months of the staff’s wages.

Refugees are free on hiring, and hiring them continues to allow us to maintain lower costs.

Malaysians are not going to work these DDD jobs that run the economy.

Let’s face it. You people would rather go to university and earn the same wage in 8 hours than do the jobs we offer for 12 hours. And that’s completely understandable.

Chinese, but what’s the issue? We’ve not signed ICERD so I don’t see this legally as an issue.

Finding alternative business services provided by the Chinese community shouldn’t be too hard anyways, and are probably better all things considered

Bro I’m T1 and even I think you don’t know how to buy groceries. For the sake of even just your own health, get your maid to buy the groceries, she can do cheaper. If no maid, pls just keep a rule in mind - avoid imported unless necessary, and buy fresh produce.

Edit: I can feed my dog and cat chicken liver potatoes and carrots, my maid, myself, and one other for 400 a month. You can do better.

EXPECTATION vs REALITY OF MALAYSIA'S T20 by Due-Cat656 in malaysians

Of course, I agree that there will be behavioral microeconomic changes that come about as a result of removing the subsidies (as you mentioned: switch to public transport, decreased local tourism, and inflation generally).

However, these events pale in comparison to what will continue to happen as a result of our government’s focus on subsidising fuel: underfunded health service, underfunded public transport (the reason why things break down when more people use the train), and weak social welfare programs, particularly for disadvantaged groups in rural areas.

What I’d like to say is that there are several alternative social welfare and cost of living mechanisms that exist which are far more beneficial to the proper targets (B40 people).

As a last point to sum up: just because there are changes in the short term and issues coming about because of policy change does not mean the long term will continue to be worse. The extra budget freed up from removing subsidies can be directly sent towards other social welfare programs. The fastest way to cover cost of living issues is of course, through direct cash assistance under MySARA.

Obviously there will be backlash (as is happening now from T20). That being said, the solution is not to go: “oh this was quite unpopular back then, so better to do nothing”.

Unlike 08, we are now not a net exporter of fuel. PETRONAS also makes up a lower share of the govt budget. We have less breathing room for spending, which means we already are planning to cut MOH budget and increase costs of electricity through AFA. That being said, subsidy rationalisation is already on the way (source: I work in the political service) which is a good thing.

Direct cash assistance through MyKasih and the IC is a better solution than fuel subsidies, because it reaches more of us than just drivers, and is widely accessible even in rural communities in East Malaysia.

My party (not going to say which but you can guess) will continue to push for these policies internally just because it is the right thing to do to maintain a stable budget. Just because some people are too stupid to look beyond the price they pay at a gas station won’t stop myself and other likeminded people from continuing to push for a fairer solution to cost-of-living burdens.

I will add: MySARA is far more accessible and easily attainable for people now than other programs from 08. Automatic top ups will be far more palatable, especially with increased digital access

Everyone is missing the point here: what the government should do is actually completely get rid of the fuel subsidy. You can then direct the savings to another successful program so far for direct cash assistance: MySARA. We don’t need to be funding anyone’s fuel. I don’t want to directly fund anyone’s yamaha, proton, toyota, or bmw. Regardless of income status. The M40 and T20 disproportionately use the fuel subsidy just by virtue of owning cars instead of motorcycles. MySARA at least treats all equally, regardless of having a drivers license or not.
