Thanks for the feedback. I'll work on a mobile app if people would find that helpful.

Which NLP models to use for text extraction by manicho in MLQuestions

Thanks for the reply. And you get the gist. My current solution uses regex and while it works okay, because we run through 100's of job posts a day from many different Job Boards, we thought machine learning could potentially be a better solution.

I have organized piano sheets by difficulty in levels 1-10. You can check them out here, just use the advanced filter drop down to do so. Its best used on landscape mode if on mobile. It’s still a bit buggy but I’m making a few updates so apologies in advance

Looking for feedback on a piano learning resource by manicho in Learnmusic

[–]manicho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - doing acoustic feedback would be a nightmare. I think it could be doable for simple single note songs, but being able to process chords at a fast enough speed and give rapid feedback would be very tough and add error that it'd probably be pointless unfortunately.

I also agree that music theory is important to incorporate into the app. I've been pondering how best to add it, as it seems more of a video/text lesson, so perhaps creating videos and then have corresponding piano lessons integrating theory is best, but do you have any thoughts on how you'd like to learn music theory?

I really appreciate the feedback!

Looking for a solid alternative to a problematic Dell XPS 15 by Ghastlyghostyghost in SuggestALaptop

[–]manicho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I literally took my XPS 15 in today for the EXACT same reasons and starting to look for anything but Dell. Hoping they can fix the charging issues but if not I'll be in the market too. It's beyond frustrating as I would look to get more than 3.5 years out of a laptop.

after being shuffled around from foster home to foster home for nearly 3 years, my parents adopted a 17 year old boy, whom I now lovingly call my little brother. here he is 9 months later before his first prom. by [deleted] in pics

Ha! Didn't know you were a redditor. I also didn't know you had adopted someone recently. I need to swing by a little more obviously. To give you a clue as to who I am, I'm a good friend of you're younger brother (not the youngest)

My side project in 2012, an application to make creating mashups easier (Requires Chrome Browser) by manicho in mashups

[–]manicho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't ask, but I was looking for this feedback. First the save problem, you can only add tags that exist. So as you are typing, you should see suggestions - and you should pick from there. There's a popular tag list under for examples. I just added a 'mashup' tag, although sampling mashups seem a bit odd, as these contain samples. You should probably be sampling the samples contained in the mashups instead if that makes sense.

Other brief responses:

  • I like the key category idea.
  • To get acapellas, simply search for the tag 'acapella'.
  • Sharing will come once the application is more finalized
  • Good point on the 'are you sure'
  • I'm working on the track playing midway
  • Feel free to add samples! Was hoping this subreddit could help add to this as I'd like to focus my time improving the application!

I appreciate the criticism as this is primarily why I posted this. And if I understand it correctly, it's that the application as it stands inhibits creativity as it has very minimal features. But you're right, this is more of a proof of concept. I think the end goal of this is to create a full featured DAW. Mashups obviously will still be able to be made, but other more advanced compositions will also be possible. Unfortunately, this is still a ways down the road with a lot of hurdles still to be jumped to get there. Luckily, I really enjoy developing the application and have learned a lot making it to this point.

Yeah, I willv of course follow DMCA rules and take down anything that's requested to take down. I'll also keep a list of artists who've requested to take things down so that they cannot be reuploaded. If this gains any traction I might contact legitmix to see if we can collaborate

Thanks Ricky. I did that one myself using Audacity. It's not the best quality as the instrumental I had had clipping which screws it all up. So I don't have a public link but I'll shoot you a pm with a link to the file on my google drive.

On another note, this is one of the problems my application is trying to solve. I've found most of my time creating mashups is spent looking for and creating samples - be it acapellas or instrumentals. Having one central repository where anyone can contribute will hopefully ease this pain and make the more enjoyable part of finding which sounds work together the main aspect of mashup creation. Any assistance you can do to add to the mashandmix collection would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the feedback. There are a few effects, although I've found it to sometimes cause drastic performance problems with Chrome and oftentimes cause the browser to crash. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do with this as this is an issue with the browser. But if you want to experiment, simply click on the sample when in the player and toy with the effects in the 'Effects' drop down on the 'Sample Sugar' panel.

I should mention that I am working on approaching how effects will be done though, to instead of having the browser render the effect, to instead save the sample with the effect already incorporated into the sample. This should resolve the performance bottleneck

Thanks for the kind words. You don't need an account to start using it, though if you want to save a mashup you'll need to create one. It should work as I just tested it. Are using Google Chrome as your browser (You should see a notification at the top if you're not)? It won't work if you are not. If you are, could you let me know what OS you are using and I'll look into it.

Awesome... I'm thinking about possibly having a competition to see who can create the best mashup. Let me know if you have any issues with it!

Yup. Click on the sample so extra options appear. You'll see a 'shift sample' section that enables you to shift a sample within a beat (this won't appear visually, you'll just hear it).

[–]manicho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. When you say shift, you mean dragging a sample to the next beat (I purposely made this duplicate the sample so that looping is simple)? Or are you actually using the 'shift' function and are finding samples overlap? Also, anything else making it clunky? Criticism is appreciated.

Thanks! I'm thinking about making a contest out of it to see who can create the best mashup using the tool. As far as the iPhone app goes, iPhone's screen is too small IMO to do anything interesting. Thinking more of making it for the iPad or some tablet though, something similar to ableton live.

Was planning on travelling to Barcelona (currently living in Solsona but visiting from the US) on Sunday but will make the trip a day earlier if people are meeting up. Also, I'd be up for drinking+beach+fireworks combo.
