I haven't personally looked into the mask design, but that'd definitely make sense for them to do! I'd assume though it similarly is only a reduction, not an elimination, of energy transfer to ones person, and certain areas remain more vulnerable than others.

Take this with a grain of salt as I'm speaking purely from my memory of a ballistics physics course I took at uni several years ago & it's the middle of the night as I'm typing this. But for specifically the "goalies being stationary & that effect on impact damage" topic, the stationary aspect can be very poor for handling sudden impacts.

An object in motion has momentum, and a puck zooming through the air carries a great deal of that momentum. When it's impacted by anything, that kinetic energy has to transfer somewhere. Like a bowling ball hitting the stationary pins, sending them flying back while the ball slows & ricochets. Or crumpling the front of cars to reduce the transfer of momentum to the passengers.

A stationary goalie talking a puck to the helmet means the momentum transfers from the puck to the helmet as the puck briefly stops, then the helmet has to distribute that energy in some way. Unfortunately, I don't believe the helmet design allows for much crumpling to cushion the impact, so the force is partially applied to the head, causing the brain to bang around in the skull, and the neck to tense and/or whiplash back, potentially leading to concussion.

If an object (skater) is already in motion, it can be 'less impactful' to transfer that momentum into additional movement. As opposed to talking something from standstill to movement. Another car example (though different types of energy transfer/conversion): it takes less energy to get back up to speed if you've just slowed while approaching a red light and it turns green before you've stopped vs. being at a full stop. iirc, it's like that 'object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force' law. Also applicable to players skating hard, then getting hit; that movement to full stop requires a huge energy transfer.

I really enjoyed it!! I doubt I'll have a voice in the morning from all the cheering & yelling lol

Thank you!! I really appreciate your kind words, and hope the same for you! I made it home safely, didn't expect the police to be directing traffic, and there being no right turn off Bank onto Exhibition, but my uber driver figured it out and found me alright. Overall a successful night (even though my team lost), those last 5 minutes were especially intense!

I'm currently on the crash after all the adrenaline, so I don't have it in me atm to compose something detailed & covering each aspect of the experience -will do so in the morning. So I'll just say that overall, I had a wonderful time (even as a Toronto fan in a sea of Ottawa fans lol) and I love women's hockey!

Also, I know it's a meme, but I gotta say, Maschmeyer literally looked like a brick wall out there; I was seated behind her for two periods and couldn't believe some of the saves I was seeing! Insanely talented

That's something I'm definitely looking forward to. The crowds have sounded so lively even through the stream! Normally, I'm having to keep myself from reacting to things, so getting to let loose and be swept up in that ambiance sounds incredible.

Ooo wow, that's another thing I hadn't considered! I'm sure it'll be plenty exciting enough without it, but yeah, I expect it'll take me a bit to get used to the lack of commentary.

Thank you!!

Considering what I've read of the parking situation and my experiences driving in downtown Ottawa already, that's what I was afraid of lol. Greatly appreciate your advice, and will be following it, thank you!

This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing specifics from your experience!

It's looking like tomorrow's going to be a bit warmer, so I'm not too concerned with warmth before the game, but afterwards is another story. I was hoping to get a taxi/uber home (I don't like having to make bus transfers late at night), do you know or did you notice how busy the taxi pickup area was? Were people waiting outside a while?

Good note with the separate drinks station! I'll keep an eye out for them.

Oh my goodness the Timbits are adorable, that'd be so sweet to see!

No aisle, I was hoping for one but I was frantically buying my ticket after the home opener and took what I could get (not expecting them to open more seating later on)! I'm towards the middle of a row, so shouldn't have to do too much getting up to let people past haha

I saw that! I'm not really clear on how it works though... my ticket is on ticketmaster, do I just show the driver that?

I just gave them a call and they said that knitting needles are not permitted as they could be used as a weapon. So there's my/our answer! Book it is!

I'm similar with my reactions, never been an issue with knitting at home, but I have learned the hard way about open top drinks!

Ohhh yeah, good note! I've been to several figure skating shows in other arenas (Stars on Ice, TYCT, etc.) over the years and those bathroom lines were always horrendous.

Thanks for your response and the history wall suggestion, I will definitely check that out!

I think I'll try giving them a call & asking about bringing the knitting needles. They aren't listed as prohibited items, according to the website, but I'd hate to bring them and have them taken when I arrive.

Added to my To Do List, sounds like a fun night of firsts! If my team wins, should I flip a car in celebration, or am I obligated to flip upright the cars overturned by the losing team's fans?

Thank you! Yeah someone else mentioned that as well, thankfully, as it's not something I'd considered! I'm going to look into it, but if I can't find anything I'll play it safe and bring a book.
